- 1Listen to the message the LORD speaks to you, people of Israel:
- 2The LORD says, 'Do not learn the ways of the heathen, and do not be dismayed by the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed by them.'
- 3For the customs of the people are worthless. For one cuts a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the craftsman, with the ax.
- 4They decorate it with silver and gold, then nail it down with hammers so it won't fall over.
- 5They stand upright like a palm tree, but they cannot speak. They must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them; they cannot do evil, nor can they do good.
- 6No one is like you, LORD. You are great, and your name is great in might.
- 7Who wouldn't fear you, King of all nations? It is your rightful due. Among all the wise people of every nation and every kingdom, there is no one like you.
- 8But they are altogether senseless and foolish; the wooden idol is a teaching of worthless things.
- 9Hammered silver is imported from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz. Engravers and goldsmiths shape the idol, then dress it in blue and purple fabric. Every bit of it is the work of skilled craftsmen.
- 10But the LORD is the true God. He is the living God and the eternal King. When his anger flares, the earth shakes, and no nation can withstand his fury.
- 11Tell them this: "The gods that did not make the heavens and the earth will vanish from the earth and from under the heavens."
- 12God made the earth by his power. He established the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.
- 13When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar. He draws up clouds from the ends of the earth, sends lightning with the rain, and releases the wind from his storehouses.
- 14Everyone is foolish in his knowledge. Every metalworker is put to shame by his carved image, for his cast image is false and has no breath in them.
- 15They are worthless, and the work of errors. In the time of their punishment they will perish.
- 16The portion of Jacob is not like them, for he is the maker of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance. The LORD of hosts is his name.
- 17Pack up your belongings from the land, O inhabitant of the fortress.
- 18For the LORD says, "Watch — this time I am going to hurl the people of this land far away. I will bring such distress on them that they will feel every bit of it."
- 19How terrible is my pain! My wound is severe. But I told myself, "This is my suffering, and I must endure it."
- 20My tabernacle is destroyed, and all my cords are broken. My children have left me, and they are not here. There is no one to set up my tent or hang my curtains.
- 21The leaders have become brutish and have not sought the LORD. Therefore, they will not prosper, and all their flocks will be scattered.
- 22Listen! The sound of a rumor is coming, and a great commotion from the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, a haunt of dragons.
- 23LORD, I know that a person's way is not in themselves; it is not for them to direct their own steps.
- 24LORD, correct me, but do it with justice, not in your anger — or you'll reduce me to nothing.
- 25Pour out your fury on the heathen that don't know you and on the families that refuse to call on your name. They have devoured Jacob, completely consumed him, and turned his homeland into a wasteland.
