  1. 1The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
  2. 2"Listen to the words of this covenant, and then go speak them to the people of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem.
  3. 3Tell them that the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Cursed is anyone who refuses to obey the terms of this covenant —
  4. 4the covenant I gave your ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt, out of that iron furnace. I told them: Obey me and follow every command I give you. If you do, you will be my people, and I will be your God —
  5. 5so that I can fulfill the oath I swore to your ancestors, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is today. Then I answered, 'So be it, O LORD.'
  6. 6Then the LORD told me, "Go proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. Say to them: 'Listen to the terms of this covenant and obey them.
  7. 7From the day I brought your ancestors out of Egypt until now, I have persistently warned them, rising early and protesting, saying: Obey my voice.
  8. 8But they did not listen or pay attention. Instead, each one followed the imagination of their evil heart. Therefore, I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but they did not do.
  9. 9Then the LORD said to me, "There is a conspiracy among the people of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem.
  10. 10They've gone back to the same sins as their ancestors, who refused to listen to my words. They've chased after other gods and worshiped them. Both the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken the covenant I made with their fathers."
  11. 11So the LORD says, "Watch — I am going to bring disaster on them that they won't be able to escape. They will cry out to me, but I will not listen.
  12. 12Then the cities of Judah and the people of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to whom they offer incense, but those gods will not save them at all in their time of trouble.
  13. 13Judah, you have as many gods as you have cities! And the people of Jerusalem have set up altars according to the number of the streets to that shameful thing, altars for burning incense to Baal.
  14. 14So do not pray for these people or cry out on their behalf, because I will not listen when they call to me in their time of trouble.
  15. 15What is my beloved doing in my house, since she has acted immorally with many, and the holy flesh is no longer with you? When you do evil, you celebrate.
  16. 16The LORD called you a green olive tree, beautiful and full of good fruit. With the sound of a great tumult, he has set it on fire, and its branches are broken.
  17. 17For the LORD of hosts, who planted you, has declared disaster against you because of the evil of the house of Israel and the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to provoke me to anger by offering incense to Baal.
  18. 18The LORD revealed it to me, and I knew it. He showed me their actions.
  19. 19I was like a lamb or an ox led to the slaughter, completely unaware that they were plotting against me. They were saying, 'Let's destroy the tree along with its fruit. Let's cut him off from the land of the living so that no one even remembers his name.'
  20. 20But LORD of hosts, you who judge righteously and test the inner thoughts and the heart, let me see your vengeance on them, for to you I have revealed my cause.
  21. 21Therefore, this is what the LORD says about the men of Anathoth who seek your life, saying, 'Do not prophesy in the name of the LORD, or you will die by our hand.'
  22. 22Because of this, the LORD of Armies says, "I will punish them. Their young men will die by the sword. Their sons and daughters will die from famine.
  23. 23Not a single one of them will survive, because I am bringing disaster on the men of Anathoth when the time comes for their punishment."
