- 1Early in the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, this message came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
- 2The LORD told me, "Make a set of straps and yoke bars, and put them around your neck.
- 3Then send them to the king of Edom, the king of Moab, the king of the Ammonites, the king of Tyrus, and the king of Zidon. Give them to the messengers who have come to Jerusalem to meet with Zedekiah king of Judah.
- 4Tell those messengers to deliver this message to their masters: 'This is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says — tell your masters:
- 5I made the earth and every person and animal on it by my great power and my outstretched arm. I give it to whoever I choose.
- 6Right now, I have handed all these lands over to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, my servant. I have even given him the wild animals to serve him.
- 7All nations will serve him, his son, and his grandson, until the time for his land comes. Then many nations and great kings will serve themselves of him.
- 8If any nation or kingdom refuses to serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and won't submit to his yoke, I will punish that nation with war, famine, and plague until I have destroyed them through his hand," declares the LORD.
- 9"So don't listen to your prophets, your fortune-tellers, your dream interpreters, your soothsayers, or your sorcerers when they tell you, 'You won't have to serve the king of Babylon.'
- 10They are feeding you lies, and the result will be that you're torn from your land. I will drive you out, and you will die.
- 11"But the nations that put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him, those I will let remain still in their own land," says the LORD. "They will farm it and live there."
- 12I gave this same message to Zedekiah king of Judah. I said, "Submit to the yoke of the king of Babylon. Serve him and his people, and you will live.
- 13Why will you and your people die by the sword, famine, and plague, as the LORD has spoken against the nation that will not serve the king of Babylon?
- 14Don't listen to the prophets who keep telling you, 'You won't have to serve the king of Babylon.' They are lying to you.
- 15I never sent them," says the LORD. "They are prophesying lies and using my name to do it. The result will be that I drive you out and you perish — both you and the prophets who are deceiving you."
- 16I also spoke to the priests and all the people, saying, "This is what the LORD says: Don't listen to your prophets who tell you, 'Look, the vessels of the LORD's house will soon be brought back from Babylon.' They are lying to you.
- 17Don't listen to them. Serve the king of Babylon and live. Why should this city be laid waste?
- 18If these men really are prophets and the word of the LORD is with them, then let them pray to the LORD of hosts that the vessels still remaining in the LORD's house, in the palace of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem won't be carried off to Babylon too.
- 19For this is what the LORD of hosts says about the pillars, the sea, the bases, and the rest of the vessels that remain in this city—
- 20the ones that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon didn't take when he deported Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, from Jerusalem to Babylon along with all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem —
- 21yes, this is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says about those remaining vessels in the LORD's house, the royal palace, and Jerusalem:
- 22They will be carried off to Babylon, and there they will stay until the day I visit them, declares the LORD. Then I will bring them back and restore them to this place.
