- 1That same year, at the beginning of King Zedekiah of Judah's reign, in the 4th year and the 5th month, a prophet named Hananiah son of Azur, from Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the LORD. With all the priests and people watching, he said,
- 2"This is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: 'I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.
- 3Within 2 full years, I will bring back to this place every vessel from the LORD's house that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took from here and carried off to Babylon.
- 4I will also bring back to this place Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, along with all the captives of Judah who were taken to Babylon,' declares the LORD. 'I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.'"
- 5Then the prophet Jeremiah responded to the prophet Hananiah right there in front of the priests and all the people standing in the LORD's house.
- 6Jeremiah said, "Amen! May the LORD do exactly that! May the LORD make your prophecy come true and bring back the vessels of the LORD's house and all the captives from Babylon to this place.
- 7But listen carefully to what I'm about to say — to you and to everyone here.
- 8The prophets who came before you and me, long ago, prophesied against many countries and great kingdoms, predicting war, evil, and pestilence.
- 9But when a prophet prophesies peace, only when that prophecy actually comes true will people know that the LORD truly sent him."
- 10Then Hananiah took the yoke off Jeremiah's neck and broke it.
- 11Hananiah announced to the whole crowd, "This is what the LORD says: 'Just like this, I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of every nation within 2 full years.'" After that, Jeremiah walked away.
- 12Sometime after Hananiah had broken the yoke off Jeremiah's neck, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
- 13Go tell Hananiah that the LORD says this: 'You have broken the yokes of wood, but you will make for them yokes of iron.'
- 14The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: 'I have placed an iron yoke on the neck of all these nations so that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and they will serve him. I have also given him the beasts of the field.'
- 15Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah, "Listen to me, Hananiah! The LORD did not send you. You are making these people trust in a lie.
- 16So the LORD says this: 'I am going to remove you from the face of the earth. You will die this very year, because you have preached rebellion against the LORD.'"
- 17Hananiah the prophet died that same year, in the 7th month.
