- 1This message is about the Ammonites. The LORD says: "Does Israel have no sons? Does he have no heir? Then why has their king taken over Gad, and why do his people live in its cities?
- 2Because of this, the days are coming," says the LORD, "when I will sound the battle cry against Rabbah of the Ammonites. It will become a pile of ruins, and its surrounding towns will be burned to the ground. Then Israel will inherit from those who were his heirs," says the LORD.
- 3Wail, Heshbon, because Ai has been destroyed! Cry out, daughters of Rabbah! Put on sackcloth and mourn! Run back and forth by the hedges, because your king will be taken into captivity—he and his priests and officials together.
- 4Why do you boast about your valleys, your flowing valley, O backsliding daughter? You trusted in your treasures, saying, 'Who will come against me?'
- 5Watch — I am going to bring terror on you from every neighbor around you," declares the Lord GOD of hosts. "Each of you will be scattered in every direction, and no one will gather the refugees back together."
- 6And afterward, I will bring back the captives of the children of Ammon, says the LORD.
- 7About Edom, the LORD of hosts says: "Is there no wisdom left in Teman? Have the wise lost all good judgment? Has their insight completely disappeared?
- 8Run away, turn back, and dwell deep, people of Dedan; for I will bring disaster upon Esau, the time when I will visit him.
- 9If grape harvesters came to your vineyard, wouldn't they at least leave a few grapes behind? If thieves broke in at night, wouldn't they only steal what they wanted?
- 10But I have stripped Esau completely bare. I have exposed every hiding place, and he won't be able to conceal himself. His children are destroyed, along with his relatives and his neighbors. He is gone.
- 11Leave your orphans with me — I will keep them alive. And let your widows trust in me."
- 12The LORD says this: "If even those who didn't deserve to drink from the cup of punishment had to drink it, do you really think you'll escape? You won't go unpunished. You will definitely drink from it.
- 13I have sworn by myself," says the LORD, "that Bozrah will become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all its cities will be perpetual wastes."
- 14I have received a message from the LORD: a messenger has been sent to the nations, saying, "Assemble your armies! March against Edom! Prepare for battle!"
- 15"I will make you insignificant among the nations, despised by everyone.
- 16Your terrifying power has deceived you, and the pride of your heart, you who live in the clefts of the rock and hold the heights of the hill. Even if you make your nest as high as the eagle's, I will bring you down from there," says the LORD.
- 17Edom will become a desolation, and everyone who passes by will be astonished and will hiss at all its plagues.
- 18Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns were overthrown," says the LORD, "no one will live there again. Not a single person will settle in it.
- 19Look, he will come up like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan against the strong dwelling place, but I will suddenly make him run away from it. And who is a chosen man that I may appoint over it? For who is like me? And who will appoint me the time? And who is that shepherd who will stand before me?
- 20So listen to what the LORD has planned against Edom, and what he intends to do to the people of Teman: even the weakest of the enemy will drag them away. Their homeland will be left desolate because of what happens to them.
- 21The earth shakes at the sound of their collapse. Their cries of anguish can be heard all the way to the Red Sea.
- 22Look, he will come up and fly like an eagle, spreading his wings over Bozrah. On that day, the hearts of the mighty men of Edom will be like the heart of a woman in labor pains.
- 23About Damascus: Hamath and Arpad are confused because they have heard bad news. They are fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet.

- 30Flee, go far away, and dwell deep, O inhabitants of Hazor," says the LORD, "for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon has made plans against you and devised a purpose against you.
- 31Get up! Attack this carefree nation that lives without a worry," says the LORD. "They have no gates or bars to protect them. They live in isolation.

- 33Hazor will become a dwelling place for dragons, a desolation forever. No one will live there; not a single person will dwell in it.
- 34This is the word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet about Elam, early in the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah:
- 35The LORD of hosts says: "I am going to break the bow of Elam — the source of their greatest strength.
- 36I will unleash winds against Elam from all four corners of the sky and scatter its people in every direction. There won't be a single nation on earth where Elam's refugees haven't fled.
- 37I will shatter Elam's courage before their enemies — before everyone who wants them dead. I will bring disaster on them, fueled by my fierce anger," says the LORD. "I will send the sword after them until I have completely destroyed them.
- 38I will set my throne in Elam and wipe out its king and officials," says the LORD.
- 39But in the latter days, I will bring back the captives of Elam, says the LORD.
