- 1When Jabin king of Hazor heard about these events, he sent messages to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,
- 2and to the kings in the northern hill country, in the plains south of Chinneroth, in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the west.
- 3and to the Canaanites on the east and on the west, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites in the mountains, and the Hivites under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh.
- 4They went out with all their armies, a vast number of people as numerous as the sand on the seashore, along with many horses and chariots.
- 5When all these kings gathered, they set up camp together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.
- 6The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid of them. By this time tomorrow, I will deliver them all dead before Israel. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire."
- 7Joshua and all his warriors launched a sudden attack against them by the waters of Merom.
- 8The LORD handed them over to Israel, who struck them down and chased them to great Sidon, Misrephothmaim, and the valley of Mizpeh to the east. They struck them until none were left alive.
- 9Joshua did to them as the LORD commanded: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.
- 10Then Joshua turned back and captured Hazor, striking down its king with the sword. Hazor had previously been the leader of all those kingdoms.
- 11They struck all the souls who were in it with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them. No one was left to breathe, and he burned Hazor with fire.
- 12Joshua captured all the cities of those kings and killed every one of their rulers with the sword, completely destroying them — just as Moses, the servant of the LORD, had commanded.
- 13But Israel did not burn any of the cities that stood on their mounds, except for Hazor; that was the only one Joshua burned.
- 14The Israelites took all the plunder and livestock from these cities for themselves, but they killed every person with the sword until no one was left alive. They did not leave anyone breathing.
- 15As the LORD commanded Moses, his servant, Moses then commanded Joshua, and Joshua did everything as instructed. He left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses.
- 16So Joshua took all that land: the hill country, all the south country, all the land of Goshen, the valley, the plain, the mountain of Israel, and the valley of the same.
- 17His conquests stretched from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, all the way to Baal Gad in the valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. He captured all their kings, struck them down, and killed them.
- 18Joshua fought against all those kings for a long time.
- 19No city made peace with the children of Israel except the Hivites, who lived in Gibeon. All the other cities were taken in battle.
- 20It was the LORD who hardened their hearts so that they would come against Israel in battle, that he might utterly destroy them, that they might receive no favor, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.
- 21During that time, Joshua eliminated the Anakim from the hill country—from Hebron, Debir, Anab, and from all the hills of Judah and Israel. Joshua completely destroyed them along with their cities.
- 22None of the Anakims were left in the land of the children of Israel; only in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod did any remain.
- 23So Joshua took control of the entire land, exactly as the LORD had promised Moses. Joshua then distributed it as an inheritance to Israel, dividing it among the tribes. And the land finally had rest from war.
