- 1When Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured Ai and completely destroyed it — doing to Ai and its king exactly what he had done to Jericho and its king — and that the people of Gibeon had made a peace treaty with Israel and were now living among them,
- 2They were very afraid because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty.
- 3So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent a message to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon, saying,
- 4Come up to me and help me attack Gibeon, because they have made peace with Joshua and the children of Israel.
- 5Therefore the five Amorite kings—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon—gathered together with all their armies, went up, and camped before Gibeon, and made war against it.
- 6The men of Gibeon sent a message to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal, saying, 'Do not abandon your servants; come quickly to save and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites living in the mountains have gathered against us.'
- 7Joshua went up from Gilgal with all the warriors and the mighty men of valor.
- 8The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hand; not one of them will be able to stand against you."
- 9Joshua traveled all night from Gilgal and surprised them.
- 10The LORD threw them into confusion before Israel, and Israel killed them with a great slaughter at Gibeon. They chased them along the road that goes up to Beth-horon and struck them down all the way to Azekah and Makkedah.
- 11As they fled from Israel and went down to Beth-horon, the LORD threw large stones from heaven on them all the way to Azekah, and they died. More died from the hailstones than those killed by the Israelites with the sword.
- 12On the day when the LORD gave the Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua spoke to the LORD. In front of all Israel, he said, 'Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and Moon, stop over the valley of Aijalon!'
- 13The sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the people had avenged themselves on their enemies. This is written in the book of Jasher. The sun remained in the middle of the sky and did not hurry to set for about a whole day.
- 14There was no day like it before or after, when the LORD listened to the voice of a man, for the LORD fought for Israel.
- 15Then Joshua and all Israel returned to the camp at Gilgal.
- 16But the five kings fled and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah.
- 17Joshua was informed that the five kings were found hiding in a cave at Makkedah.
- 18And Joshua said, 'Roll large stones over the entrance of the cave and station men there to guard it.'
- 19Do not delay, but pursue your enemies and strike those at the rear. Do not allow them to enter their cities, for the LORD your God has delivered them into your hand.
- 20When Joshua and the children of Israel had finished slaying them with a very great slaughter until they were consumed, the survivors who remained entered into fortified cities.
- 21All the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace. None moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
- 22Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me."
- 23And they did so, bringing out the five kings from the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
- 24When the kings were brought to Joshua, he called all the men of Israel and said to the commanders of the army who had fought with him, 'Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.' They came forward and placed their feet on the kings' necks.
- 25Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid or discouraged. Be strong and courageous, for this is what the LORD will do to all your enemies you fight against."
- 26Afterward, Joshua struck them down, killed them, and hung them on five trees, where they remained until evening.
- 27At sunset, Joshua commanded that they take the bodies down from the trees and throw them into the cave where they had been hidden. Large stones were placed at the entrance of the cave, and they remain there to this day.
- 28That day, Joshua captured Makkedah and struck it with the edge of the sword, completely destroying its king and all the souls there, leaving no survivors. He did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
- 29Joshua and all Israel moved from Makkedah to Libnah and fought against it.
- 30The LORD also delivered the city and its king into the hand of Israel. Joshua struck it with the edge of the sword, along with all the souls in it; he let none remain. He did to its king what he had done to the king of Jericho.
- 31Joshua and all Israel moved from Libnah to Lachish, set up camp around it, and fought against it.
- 32The LORD gave Lachish to Israel. Joshua captured it on the 2nd day and put everyone in it to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah.
- 33Then King Horam of Gezer came to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his people, leaving no survivors.
- 34From Lachish, Joshua and all Israel went to Eglon. They set up camp against it and fought it.
- 35They captured it that day and struck it with the sword. He completely destroyed all the souls in it that day, just as he had done to Lachish.
- 36Joshua and all Israel went up from Eglon to Hebron and fought against it.
- 37They captured the city, its king, and all its surrounding towns, putting everyone to the sword. Joshua left no survivors, just as he had done to Eglon. He completely destroyed the city and every person in it.
- 38Joshua and all Israel returned to Debir and fought against it.
- 39He captured it, along with its king and all its cities. They struck them with the sword, completely destroying everyone there, leaving no survivors. He did to Debir and its king what he had done to Hebron, and to Libnah and its king.
- 40Joshua struck down the entire region—the hill country, the southern area, the valleys, and the springs—along with all their kings. He left no survivors, completely destroying everything that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded.
- 41Joshua struck them from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and throughout the entire region of Goshen up to Gibeon.
- 42Joshua captured all these kings and their land at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.
- 43Joshua and all Israel returned to the camp at Gilgal.
