- 1There was also an allotment for the tribe of Manasseh, because he was Joseph's firstborn. Specifically, it was for Machir, the firstborn of Manasseh and father of Gilead, who was a warrior. Therefore, he received Gilead and Bashan.
- 2There was also a lot for the rest of the children of Manasseh by their families: for the children of Abiezer, Helek, Asriel, Shechem, Hepher, and Shemida. These were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph, by their families.
- 3Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, only daughters. The names of his daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
- 4They approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders, saying, "The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our relatives." So, according to the LORD's command, he gave them an inheritance among their father's relatives.
- 5Manasseh received ten portions of land, in addition to the land of Gilead and Bashan, which were on the other side of the Jordan.
- 6This was because the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance along with his sons. The rest of Manasseh's sons received the land of Gilead.
- 7The border of Manasseh extended from Asher to Michmethah, which is near Shechem, and then continued on the right side to the inhabitants of En Tappuah.
- 8Manasseh had the land of Tappuah, but the town of Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim.
- 9The border went down to the brook Kanah, south of the brook. These cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh. Manasseh's border was on the north side of the brook and ended at the sea.
- 10To the south, it was Ephraim's, and to the north, it was Manasseh's, with the sea as his border. They met together in Asher on the north and in Issachar on the east.
- 11In Issachar and Asher, Manasseh had Beth-shean and its towns, Ibleam and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Endor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns, even three countries.
- 12Yet the people of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites continued to live in that land.
- 13Later, when the Israelites became strong, they made the Canaanites pay tribute, but they did not completely drive them out.
- 14The descendants of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, "Why have you given us only one lot and one portion to inherit, considering we are a large people, since the LORD has blessed us so far?"
- 15Joshua replied, "If you are a great people, then go up to the wood country and cut down trees for yourselves there in the land of the Perizzites and the giants, if Mount Ephraim is too narrow for you."
- 16The descendants of Joseph said, "The hill country isn't enough for us, and all the Canaanites living in the valley have iron chariots, including those in Beth-shean and its towns, and those in the valley of Jezreel."
- 17Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and Manasseh, saying, "You are a great people and have great power; you shall not have only one lot."
- 18The mountain will be yours, for it is covered with forest, and you will cut it down. The outgoings of it will be yours, for you will drive out the Canaanites, even though they have iron chariots and are strong.
