- 1The entire congregation of the children of Israel gathered at Shiloh and set up the tabernacle of the congregation there. The land was subdued before them.
- 2There were still seven tribes among the children of Israel that had not yet received their inheritance.
- 3Joshua said to the Israelites, "How long will you delay going in to take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you?"
- 4Select three men from each tribe. I will send them to explore the land and describe it according to each tribe's inheritance. Then they will return to me.
- 5They shall divide it into seven parts: Judah shall remain in their territory on the south, and the house of Joseph shall remain in their territory on the north.
- 6You shall survey the land and divide it into seven parts, then bring the description to me here. I will cast lots for you here before the LORD our God.
- 7The Levites have no share of land among you because their inheritance is the priesthood of the LORD. Gad, Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh have already received their inheritance east of the Jordan, given to them by Moses, the servant of the LORD.
- 8The men got up and left. Joshua instructed those who were to survey the land, saying, "Go and walk through the land, describe it, and then return to me. I will cast lots for you here before the LORD in Shiloh."
- 9The men traveled through the land, recorded it city by city into seven parts in a book, and returned to Joshua at the camp in Shiloh.
- 10Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before the LORD, and there he divided the land among the Israelites according to their divisions.
- 11The lot for the tribe of the children of Benjamin came up according to their families, and their territory was between the children of Judah and the children of Joseph.

- 14The border then turned and curved southward from the hill facing Beth-horon, and ended at Kiriath-baal (also known as Kiriath-jearim), a city of the children of Judah. This was the western boundary.
- 15The southern boundary started at the edge of Kiriath-jearim, extended westward, and continued to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah.
- 16The border then went down to the end of the mountain that lies before the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is in the valley of the giants on the north. It descended to the valley of Hinnom, along the southern side of Jebusi, and continued down to Enrogel.
- 17It extended northward to En-shemesh, then continued to Geliloth, which is opposite the ascent of Adummim, and went down to the stone of Bohan son of Reuben.
- 18It passed along the ridge facing the Arabah to the north and went down into the Arabah.
- 19The border continued along the north side of Beth-hoglah and ended at the northern bay of the Salt Sea, at the southern end of the Jordan. This was the southern boundary.
