- 1Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer, put fire in it, placed incense on it, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them.
- 2Fire blazed out from the LORD and consumed them, and they died right there in the LORD's presence.
- 3Moses said to Aaron, "This is what the LORD meant when he said, 'I will be treated as holy by those who come near me, and before all the people I will be glorified.'" Aaron said nothing.
- 4Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel, Aaron's uncle, and said to them, 'Come near and carry your relatives away from the sanctuary and out of the camp.'
- 5So they went near and carried them in their coats out of the camp, as Moses had said.
- 6Moses said to Aaron and to his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, "Do not uncover your heads or tear your clothes, so that you do not die and wrath does not come upon all the people. But your brothers, the whole house of Israel, may mourn the burning that the LORD has kindled."
- 7"And don't leave the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, or you'll die, because the LORD's anointing oil is on you." They did exactly what Moses said.
- 8Then the LORD spoke directly to Aaron:
- 9"Whenever you or your sons enter the Tent of Meeting, do not drink wine or any other strong drink, or you will die. This is a permanent rule for every generation that follows you.
- 10so that you may tell the difference between what is holy and what is unholy, and between what is unclean and what is clean.
- 11You are also responsible for teaching the people of Israel every law the LORD has given them through Moses."
- 12Moses spoke to Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar: "Take the grain offering that's left over from the LORD's fire offerings and eat it without yeast beside the altar, because it is most holy.
- 13Eat it in a holy place, because it's your rightful share — yours and your sons' — from the LORD's fire offerings. That's what I've been commanded to tell you.
- 14You shall eat the wave breast and the heave shoulder in a clean place; you, your sons, and your daughters with you. These are your due and your sons' due from the sacrifices of peace offerings of the children of Israel.
- 15They must bring the heave shoulder and the wave breast with the offerings made by fire of the fat, to wave it as a wave offering before the LORD. It will belong to you and to your sons with you, by a statute forever, as the LORD has commanded.
- 16Later, Moses went looking for the goat of the sin offering and discovered it had been completely burned up. He was furious with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron's surviving sons, and demanded:
- 17"Why didn't you eat the sin offering in the holy place? It's most holy! God gave it to you so you could bear the guilt of the community and make atonement for them before the LORD.
- 18Look, its blood was not brought inside the holy place. You should indeed have eaten it in the holy place, as I commanded.
- 19Aaron answered Moses, "Look — today my sons offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD, and yet this tragedy has struck me. If I had eaten the sin offering today, would the LORD really have been pleased with that?"
- 20When Moses heard this, he accepted Aaron's answer.
