The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.

Verse Analysis

Plain-English insight for readers

In this verse, Jesus uses the metaphor of the eye to illustrate how our perspective affects our entire being. A 'single' eye represents clarity and focus, allowing light to fill our lives, symbolizing goodness and truth. Conversely, an 'evil' eye suggests a distorted view, leading to darkness, which represents sin and negativity. This teaching emphasizes the importance of our inner vision and how it shapes our thoughts, actions, and overall spiritual health. If we maintain a clear and positive outlook, we can experience the fullness of light in our lives. However, if we allow negativity or evil to cloud our vision, it can lead to spiritual darkness and confusion. Thus, the state of our eyes—our focus and intentions—directly influences our spiritual well-being and the way we interact with the world around us. Explore related depression.

Luke 1: The Births of John the Baptist and Jesus Foretold

In the days of Herod, king of Judaea, a priest named Zacharias serves in the temple. He and his wife Elisabeth are both righteous but have no children because Elisabeth is barren, and they are both old. While Zacharias burns incense, the angel Gabriel appears to him and says Elisabeth will bear a son who is to be named John. The child will be great before the Lord, will drink no wine or strong drink, and will be filled with the Holy Ghost from his mother's womb. He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. Zacharias asks how he can know this, since he and his wife are old. Gabriel says Zacharias will be unable to speak until these things come to pass because he did not believe.
