- 1One day, Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just like John taught his disciples."
- 2And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
- 3Give us day by day our daily bread.
- 4And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
- 5Then he said to them, "Imagine you go to a friend's house at midnight and say, 'Friend, lend me 3 loaves of bread.
- 6A friend of mine just showed up from a journey, and I don't have anything to offer him.'
- 7And your friend calls out from inside, 'Don't bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are in bed with me. I can't get up and give you anything.'
- 8I tell you, even if he won't get up and give him anything because they are friends, he will get up and give him whatever he needs because of his persistence.
- 9So I tell you: Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
- 10Because everyone who asks receives. Everyone who seeks finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.
- 11If a son asks any of you who is a father for bread, will you give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will you give him a snake instead?
- 12“Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?”
- 13So if you, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?
- 14Jesus was driving out a demon that had made a man unable to speak. When the demon left, the man began talking, and the crowd was amazed.
- 15But some of them said, "He drives out demons by the power of Beelzebub, the ruler of demons."
- 16Others, tempting him, asked for a sign from heaven.
- 17But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to ruin, and a house divided against itself will fall."
- 18So if Satan is fighting against himself, how can his kingdom survive? I ask because you're claiming I drive out demons by Beelzebub's power.
- 19And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your followers drive them out? Therefore, they will be your judges.
- 20But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then without a doubt the kingdom of God has come upon you.
- 21"When a strong man is fully armed and guards his estate, everything he owns is safe.
- 22But when someone stronger than he comes upon him and overcomes him, he takes from him all the armor he trusted in and divides his spoils.
- 23"Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever doesn't gather with me scatters.
- 24"When an unclean spirit leaves a person, it wanders through barren places looking for rest. When it finds none, it says, 'I'll go back to the home I left.'
- 25When it returns, it finds the place swept clean and put in order.
- 26Then it goes and brings 7 other spirits more wicked than itself, and they all move in and settle there. That person ends up far worse off than before."
- 27While he was saying these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said, "Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you!"
- 28But Jesus replied, "Even more blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it."
- 29As the crowds grew larger, Jesus began to say, "This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet."
- 30Just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be a sign to this generation.
- 31The Queen of the South will stand up at the judgment alongside the people of this generation and condemn them, because she traveled from the ends of the earth to hear Solomon's wisdom — and someone greater than Solomon is standing right here.
- 32The people of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment alongside this generation and condemn it, because they repented when Jonah preached to them — and someone greater than Jonah is standing right here.
- 33"No one lights a lamp and then hides it away or puts it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand so that everyone who comes in can see the light.
- 34Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is single, your whole body is full of light. But when your eye is evil, your whole body is full of darkness.
- 35So be careful that the light inside you hasn't actually become darkness.
- 36If your whole body is full of light, with no dark corner left, it will be completely radiant — like when a lamp shines its bright light on you."
- 37When Jesus finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat at his house. So Jesus went in and took his place at the table.
- 38The Pharisee was surprised to see that Jesus hadn't washed before the meal.
- 39The Lord said to him, "You Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside you're full of greed and wickedness.
- 40You fools! Didn't the one who made the outside also make the inside?
- 41“But instead, give charitable gifts from what you have, and look, all things are clean to you.”
- 42But woe to you, Pharisees! You tithe mint, rue, and all kinds of herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have done these things without neglecting the others.
- 43"How terrible it will be for you Pharisees! You love the most important seats in the synagogues and being greeted with respect in the marketplaces.
- 44"How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You're like unmarked graves that people walk over without even knowing it."
- 45One of the experts in the law spoke up and said, "Teacher, when you say these things, you're insulting us too."
- 46Jesus replied, "Woe to you experts in the law as well! You load people with burdens that are hard to carry, but you won't lift a single finger to help them."
- 47How terrible it will be for you! You build the tombs for the prophets, but it was your own ancestors who killed them.
- 48“You truly testify that you approve of the deeds of your fathers, because they killed them, and you build their tombs.”
- 49"That's why the wisdom of God declared, 'I will send them prophets and apostles. Some of them they will kill, and others they will persecute.'
- 50As a result, this generation will be held accountable for the blood of every prophet shed since the world began —
- 51from the blood of Abel all the way to the blood of Zachariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I'm telling you, this generation will answer for all of it.
- 52"How terrible it will be for you experts in the law! You've taken away the key to knowledge. You didn't enter in yourselves, and you blocked those who were trying to enter."
- 53As he said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him intensely and provoke him to speak about many topics.
- 54setting traps for him and trying to catch him saying something they could use against him.
