- 1At that time, some people told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
- 2Jesus responded, "Do you think those Galileans were worse sinners than everyone else in Galilee just because this happened to them?
- 3“I tell you, no. But unless you repent, you will all perish too.”
- 4And what about the 18 people who died when the tower in Siloam collapsed on them? Do you think they were guiltier than everyone else living in Jerusalem?
- 5“I tell you, no. But unless you repent, you will all perish too.”
- 6Then he told them this parable: "A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard. He went to check it for fruit but didn't find any.
- 7So he told the gardener, 'Look, for three years I've been coming to find fruit on this fig tree and haven't found any. Cut it down; why should it use up the ground?'
- 8The gardener replied, 'Sir, give it one more year. Let me dig around it and add fertilizer.
- 9If it produces fruit next year, great. But if not, then you can cut it down.'"
- 10One Sabbath day, Jesus was teaching in a synagogue.
- 11A woman was there who had a spirit of infirmity for 18 years. She was hunched over and completely unable to stand up straight.
- 12When Jesus noticed her, he called her over and said, "Woman, you are set free from your infirmity."
- 13He placed his hands on her, and instantly she straightened up and began praising God.
- 14But the synagogue leader was furious that Jesus had healed someone on the Sabbath. He turned to the crowd and said, "There are 6 days for work. Come and get healed on one of those days — not on the Sabbath!"
- 15The Lord then answered him, saying, "You hypocrite! Doesn't each of you untie his ox or donkey from the stall on the Sabbath and lead it to get water?"
- 16So shouldn't this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan has kept bound for 18 years, be set free from this bond on the Sabbath?
- 17When he said these things, all his enemies were ashamed, and all the people rejoiced over all the glorious things that were done by him.
- 18Then Jesus asked, "What is the kingdom of God like? What can I compare it to?
- 19“It is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and threw into his garden. It grew and became a great tree, and the birds of the air lived in its branches.”
- 20He continued, "What else can I compare the kingdom of God to?
- 21“It is like yeast that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.”
- 22Jesus continued traveling through towns and villages, teaching as he made his way toward Jerusalem.
- 23Someone asked him, "Lord, will only a few people be saved?" He answered them,
- 24"Fight to get through the narrow door, because many people will try to enter and won't be able to.
- 25Once the master of the house gets up and locks the door, you'll be left standing outside knocking and calling, 'Lord, Lord, open up for us!' But he'll answer, 'I don't know you or where you come from.'
- 26Then you'll protest, 'But we ate and drank with you! You taught in our streets!'
- 27“But he will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you are from. Go away from me, all you who commit wrongdoing.’”
- 28You'll weep and grind your teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets inside the kingdom of God — while you yourselves are thrown out.
- 29People will come from east and west, from north and south, and take their places at the table in the kingdom of God.
- 30“Look, some who are last will be first, and some who are first will be last.”
- 31That same day, some Pharisees came to Jesus and warned him, "You need to leave this area — Herod wants to kill you."
- 32He said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Look, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will be brought to completion.’”
- 33But I must keep moving today, tomorrow, and the next day — because no prophet can die outside of Jerusalem."
- 34Jerusalem, Jerusalem — you murder the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How many times I wanted to gather your children together the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you refused!
- 35Look, your house is abandoned and desolate. I tell you, you won't see me again until the day comes when you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'"
