- 1As they approached Jerusalem, near Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples.
- 2He told them, "Go into the village just ahead of you. As soon as you enter it, you'll find a young donkey tied up that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here."
- 3"If anyone asks you, 'Why are you doing that?' just say, 'The Lord needs it,' and they'll send it right away."
- 4So they went and found the young donkey tied up by a door, out on the street where 2 roads met. They untied it.
- 5Some people standing nearby asked them, "What are you doing, untying that donkey?"
- 6They answered exactly as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them take it.
- 7They brought the donkey to Jesus and draped their cloaks over its back, and he sat on it.
- 8Many people spread their cloaks on the road ahead of him, while others cut leafy branches from the trees and laid them along the path.
- 9The crowds walking ahead of him and those following behind kept shouting, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"
- 10Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!
- 11Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. He looked around at everything, but since it was already evening, he left for Bethany with the twelve.
- 12The next day, as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry.
- 13He noticed a fig tree in the distance that was full of leaves, so he went over to see if it had any fruit. But when he reached it, he found nothing but leaves — it wasn't the season for figs.
- 14Jesus said to the tree, "May no one ever eat fruit from you again." His disciples heard him say it.
- 15When they arrived in Jerusalem, Jesus went into the temple and began to drive out those who were buying and selling there. He overthrew the tables of the money changers and the seats of those selling doves.
- 16He would not allow anyone to carry any container through the temple.
- 17Then he taught them, saying, "Doesn't Scripture say, 'My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations'? But you've turned it into a den of thieves."
- 18The chief priests and the scribes heard about this and began looking for a way to kill him. They were afraid of him because the crowds were amazed by his teaching.
- 19When evening came, he left the city.
- 20The next morning, as they walked past the fig tree, they saw it had completely withered from the roots up.
- 21Peter remembered and said to him, "Master, look, the fig tree you cursed has withered away!"
- 22Jesus replied, "Have faith in God.
- 23I tell you the truth: if anyone says to this mountain, 'Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' and doesn't doubt in his heart but truly believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.
- 24That's why I'm telling you — whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you've received it, and it will be yours.
- 25And when you stand praying, if you're holding anything against someone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven will also forgive your trespasses.
- 26But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.
- 27They returned to Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking through the temple, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders approached him.
- 28They demanded, "What authority do you have to do these things? Who gave you this authority?"
- 29Jesus said to them, "I'll ask you one question. Answer me, and I'll tell you by what authority I do these things.
- 30John's baptism—was it from heaven, or from men? Answer me.
- 31They debated among themselves: "If we say, 'From heaven,' he'll ask, 'Then why didn't you believe him?'
- 32But if we say, 'From men,' they feared the people, because everyone believed John was truly a prophet.
- 33So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." Jesus replied, "Then I'm not going to tell you by what authority I do these things either."
