  1. 1Jesus left that area and traveled to the region of Judea and across the Jordan River. Once again crowds gathered around him, and as he always did, he began teaching them.
  2. 2Some Pharisees approached him with a question designed to trap him. "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" they asked.
  3. 3And he answered and said to them, "What did Moses command you?"
  4. 4They said, "Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away."
  5. 5Jesus told them, "Moses wrote that rule for you because your hearts are hard.
  6. 6But from the very beginning of creation, God made them male and female.
  7. 7That's why a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife,
  8. 8and the two will become one flesh. They are no longer two, but one flesh.
  9. 9So what God has joined together, no one should separate."
  10. 10Later, when they were back inside the house, his disciples brought up the same topic again.
  11. 11He told them, "Any man who divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery against her.
  12. 12And if a woman divorces her husband and marries someone else, she commits adultery."
  13. 13People were bringing their little children to Jesus so he could touch them, but the disciples scolded those who brought them.
  14. 14When Jesus saw this, he was deeply upset. "Let the little children come to me!" he said. "Don't stop them, because the kingdom of God belongs to people like these.
  15. 15I tell you the truth: anyone who doesn't receive the kingdom of God the way a little child does will never enter it."
  16. 16Then he gathered the children into his arms, placed his hands on them, and blessed them.
  17. 17As Jesus was heading out on the road, a man came running up and dropped to his knees before him. "Good Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
  18. 18Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.
  19. 19“You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not kill,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and mother.’”
  20. 20"Teacher," the man replied, "I've kept all of these since I was young."
  21. 21Jesus looked at him and loved him. "There's one thing you're missing," he said. "Go sell everything you own and give to the poor. You'll have treasure in heaven. Then come, take up the cross, and follow me."
  22. 22The man's face fell when he heard this, and he walked away grieved — because he was very wealthy.
  23. 23Jesus looked around at his disciples and said, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!"
  24. 24The disciples were stunned by his words. But Jesus said again, "Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God!
  25. 25It's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God."
  26. 26They were completely astonished and said to each other, "Then who can possibly be saved?"
  27. 27Jesus looked at them and said, "For people, it's impossible. But not for God — because all things are possible with God."
  28. 28Peter spoke up: "We've left everything behind to follow you."
  29. 29Jesus answered, “Truly, I tell you, there is no one who has left a house, brothers, sisters, father, mother, wife, children, or lands for my sake and the gospel’s,
  30. 30who will not receive one hundred times as much now in this time—houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and lands, along with persecutions—and in the world to come, eternal life.”
  31. 31But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first."
  32. 32They were on the road heading up to Jerusalem, with Jesus walking ahead of them. The disciples were amazed, and those following behind were afraid. He pulled the twelve aside again and began telling them what things would happen to him.
  33. 33"Listen," he said, "we're going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes. They will condemn him to death and turn him over to the Gentiles.
  34. 34They will mock him, scourge him, spit on him, and kill him. On the third day, he will rise again.
  35. 35James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and said, "Teacher, we want you to do something for us — whatever we ask."
  36. 36"What do you want me to do for you?" he asked.
  37. 37They answered, "When you come into your glory, let one of us sit at your right hand and the other at your left."
  38. 38Jesus said to them, "You don't know what you're asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink? Can you be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?"
  39. 39"We can," they said. Jesus told them, "You will indeed drink the cup I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism I endure.
  40. 40But sitting at my right or left — that's not mine to give. Those places belong to the ones they've been prepared for."
  41. 41When the other ten disciples heard about this, they were very displeased with James and John.
  42. 42But Jesus called them to him and said, "You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them."
  43. 43But it must not be that way among you. Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant.
  44. 44And whoever wants to be first must be the slave of everyone.
  45. 45Even the Son of Man didn't come to be served, but to serve — and to give his life as a ransom for many."
  46. 46They arrived in Jericho. As Jesus was leaving the city with his disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting beside the road.
  47. 47When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth passing by, he started shouting, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"
  48. 48Many people told him to be quiet, but he only shouted louder, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"
  49. 49Jesus stopped and said, "Call him over." So they called to the blind man, "Cheer up! Get on your feet — he's calling for you!"
  50. 50Bartimaeus threw off his cloak, jumped to his feet, and came to Jesus.
  51. 51"What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked him. The blind man said, "Lord, I want to receive my sight."
  52. 52Jesus said to him, "Go your way; your faith has made you whole." Instantly he received his sight and followed Jesus down the road.
