- 1Around that time, another massive crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat. Jesus called his disciples over and said to them,
- 2I have compassion for these people, because they have been with me for three days and have nothing to eat.
- 3If I send them home hungry, they'll collapse on the way — some of them have traveled a long distance."
- 4His disciples replied, "Where could anyone find enough bread to feed all these people out here in the middle of nowhere?"
- 5Jesus asked them, "How many loaves do you have?" They answered, "7."
- 6He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then he took the 7 loaves, gave thanks to God, broke them apart, and handed the pieces to his disciples to pass out. They served the food to the crowd.
- 7They also had a few small fish. Jesus blessed them and told the disciples to serve those as well.
- 8Everyone ate until they were full, and when they collected the leftovers, they filled 7 baskets.
- 9About 4,000 people had eaten. After that, Jesus sent the crowd on their way.
- 10Right away, he got into a boat with his disciples and headed to the region of Dalmanutha.
- 11The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, asking for a sign from heaven to test him.
- 12Jesus sighed deeply in his spirit and said, "Why does this generation keep demanding a sign? I'm telling you the truth — no sign will be given to this generation."
- 13Then he left them, got back in the boat, and crossed to the other side of the lake.
- 14The disciples had forgotten to bring food along, and they only had one loaf of bread with them in the boat.
- 15Jesus warned them, "Watch out — guard yourselves against the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod."
- 16They started discussing this among themselves, saying, "He's saying this because we didn't bring any bread."
- 17Jesus knew what they were thinking and said, "Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not get it? Do you still not understand? Are your hearts that hard?
- 18You have eyes — can't you see? You have ears — can't you hear? Don't you remember?
- 19When I broke the 5 loaves for the 5,000, how many baskets of leftovers did you pick up?" They answered, "12."
- 20"And when I broke the 7 loaves for the 4,000, how many baskets of leftovers did you pick up?" They said, "7."
- 21He said to them, "How is it that you still don't understand?"
- 22They arrived at Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man to Jesus, begging him to touch the man.
- 23Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. He spit on the man's eyes, placed his hands on him, and asked, "Can you see anything?"
- 24The man looked up and said, "I can see people, but they look like trees walking around."
- 25Jesus placed his hands on the man's eyes again and made him look up. His sight was restored, and he could see everything clearly.
- 26He sent him away to his house, saying, “Do not go into the town, or tell it to anyone in the town.”
- 27Jesus and his disciples traveled to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. Along the way, he asked them, "Who do people say I am?"
- 28They replied, "Some say John the Baptist. Others say Elijah. And others say you're one of the prophets."
- 29"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Christ."
- 30Jesus strictly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.
- 31Then he began teaching them that the Son of Man would have to suffer terribly, be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, be killed, and then rise again after 3 days.
- 32He spoke that saying openly. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
- 33But Jesus turned around, looked at his disciples, and rebuked Peter, saying, "Get behind me, Satan! You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."
- 34Then he called the crowd over along with his disciples and said, "If anyone wants to follow me, they must deny themselves, pick up their cross, and follow me.
- 35Because whoever tries to hold on to their life will lose it, but whoever gives up their life for my sake and for the sake of the gospel will save it.
- 36What good is it if someone gains the whole world but loses their own soul?
- 37What could anyone possibly give in exchange for their soul?
- 38If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels.
