- 1Then he told them, "I tell you the truth: some of you standing here right now will not die before you see the kingdom of God arrive with power."
- 2Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain by themselves, and he was transfigured before them.
- 3His clothes became shining, extremely white like snow, whiter than any bleach on earth could make them.
- 4Then Elijah and Moses appeared and began talking with Jesus.
- 5Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three tents—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
- 6He did not know what to say, for they were very afraid.
- 7Then a cloud came down and covered them, and a voice spoke from the cloud: "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him."
- 8Suddenly, when they looked around, they saw no one except Jesus with them.
- 9As they made their way down the mountain, Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
- 10They kept it to themselves, but they debated with each other about what "rising from the dead" could mean.
- 11They asked him, "Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?"
- 12He answered and told them, “Elijah truly comes first and restores all things; and how it is written of the Son of Man that he must suffer many things and be treated as nothing.”
- 13"I'm telling you, Elijah has already come, and people did whatever they wanted to him — just as the Scriptures said they would."
- 14When they returned to the other disciples, they found a large crowd gathered around them, with scribes arguing with them.
- 15Immediately, when all the people saw him, they were greatly amazed and ran to greet him.
- 16He asked the scribes, "What are you arguing with them about?"
- 17A man in the crowd spoke up and said, "Teacher, I brought my son to you, who has a spirit that makes him unable to speak."
- 18“Wherever it seizes him, it tears him. He foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and wastes away. I spoke to your disciples that they should cast him out, and they could not.”
- 19Jesus responded, "You faithless generation! How long must I stay with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me."
- 20So they brought the boy to Jesus. When the spirit saw him, it immediately caused the boy to convulse. He fell to the ground, rolling around and foaming at the mouth.
- 21Jesus asked the father, "How long has this been happening to him?" The father answered, "Since he was a small child."
- 22"It has thrown him into fire and into water over and over, trying to kill him. But if you can do anything at all, please have compassion on us and help us."
- 23Jesus said to him, "'If you can'? Everything is possible for the one who believes."
- 24Immediately, the boy's father cried out with tears, 'Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!'
- 25When Jesus saw that the people were running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying, "You deaf and mute spirit, I charge you, come out of him and never enter him again!"
- 26The spirit screamed, threw the boy into terrible convulsions, and came out. The boy lay there motionless, looking so lifeless that most of the people said, "He's dead."
- 27But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and the boy stood on his feet.
- 28Later, when Jesus had gone inside a house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"
- 29He told them, "This kind can only be driven out through prayer and fasting."
- 30They left that area and traveled through Galilee. Jesus didn't want anyone to know where they were,
- 31because he was teaching his disciples. He told them, "The Son of Man is going to be handed over to men who will kill him. But 3 days after he is killed, he will rise again."
- 32They didn't understand what he meant, and they were too afraid to ask him about it.
- 33They arrived in Capernaum, and once they were inside the house, Jesus asked them, "What were you arguing about on the road?"
- 34They stayed silent, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest.
- 35He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he will be last of all and servant of all.”
- 36He brought a little child over and stood the child in the middle of them. Then he picked the child up in his arms and said,
- 37Whoever receives one of these children in my name receives me; and whoever receives me does not receive me, but the one who sent me.
- 38John said to him, "Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons using your name, and we tried to stop him because he isn't one of us."
- 39But Jesus said, "Do not stop him, for no one who performs a miracle in my name can quickly speak evil of me."
- 40Whoever is not against us is for us.
- 41I tell you the truth: anyone who gives you even a cup of water because you belong to Christ will certainly receive their reward.
- 42But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for that person to have a millstone tied around their neck and be thrown into the sea.
- 43If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It's better to enter life missing a hand than to have both hands and be thrown into hell, into the fire that never goes out,
- 44where the worm never dies and the fire is never quenched.
- 45If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It's better to enter life lame than to have both feet and be thrown into hell, into the fire that never goes out,
- 46where the worm never dies and the fire is never quenched.
- 47If your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It's better to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have both eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell,
- 48where the worm never dies and the fire is never quenched.
- 49Everyone will be salted with fire, and every sacrifice will be salted with salt.
- 50“Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, with what will you season it? Have salt in yourselves and have peace with one another.”
