  1. 1The daughters of Zelophehad came forward. Zelophehad was the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh — from the clan of Manasseh son of Joseph. His daughters' names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
  2. 2They stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders, and the entire community at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting and said,
  3. 3"Our father died in the wilderness. He wasn't part of the group that rebelled against the LORD with Korah — he died for his own sin. But he had no sons.
  4. 4Why should our father's name disappear from his family just because he had no son? Give us land among our father's relatives."
  5. 5Moses brought their case before the LORD.
  6. 6The LORD said to Moses,
  7. 7"The daughters of Zelophehad are right. You must give them an inheritance of land among their father's relatives. Transfer their father's inheritance to them.
  8. 8Tell the people of Israel: 'If a man dies without a son, his inheritance passes to his daughter.
  9. 9If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers.
  10. 10If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father's brothers.
  11. 11If his father has no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, and that person will take possession of it.' This will be a permanent legal rule for the people of Israel, just as the LORD commanded Moses."
  12. 12The LORD said to Moses, "Go up this mountain of Abarim and look out over the land I have given to the people of Israel.
  13. 13When you have seen it, you too will join your ancestors, just as Aaron your brother did.
  14. 14This is because you both rebelled against my command in the wilderness of Zin when the community quarreled with me. You failed to honor me as holy before their eyes at the waters." These are the waters of Meribah in Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin.
  15. 15Moses said to the LORD,
  16. 16Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation,
  17. 17someone who will go out before them and come in before them, who will lead them out and bring them in, so the congregation of the LORD will not be like sheep without a shepherd.
  18. 18The LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hand on him.
  19. 19Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire community, and commission him in front of everyone.
  20. 20And you shall give him some of your honor, so that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.
  21. 21He will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will seek counsel for him according to the judgment of Urim before the LORD. At his word, they will go out, and at his word, they will come in, both he and all the children of Israel with him, the entire congregation.
  22. 22Moses did exactly what the LORD commanded. He brought Joshua before Eleazar the priest and the whole community.
  23. 23He laid his hands on him and commissioned him, just as the LORD had instructed through Moses.
