- 1Moses spoke to the tribal leaders of Israel and said, "This is what the LORD has commanded.
- 2When a man makes a vow to the LORD or swears an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he must not break his word. He must do everything he promised.
- 3If a young woman, while living in her father's house during her youth, makes a vow to the LORD and binds her soul with a bond,
- 4and her father hears her vow and the bond with which she has bound her soul, and if her father says nothing to her, then all her vows shall stand, and every bond with which she has bound her soul shall stand.
- 5But if her father forbids her on the day he hears about it, none of her vows or the bonds with which she has bound her soul will stand. The LORD will forgive her, because her father disallowed her.
- 6If she has a husband when she makes a vow or speaks anything from her lips that binds her soul,
- 7and her husband hears about it and remains silent towards her on the day he hears it, then her vows shall stand, and the bonds with which she bound her soul shall stand.
- 8But if her husband forbids it on the day he hears about it, he will cancel the vow she made and what she uttered with her lips, which bound her soul. The LORD will forgive her.
- 9However, every vow made by a widow or a divorced woman, by which they have bound their souls, shall stand against her.
- 10If a woman makes a vow or binds her soul with an oath while living in her husband's house,
- 11and her husband hears about it but says nothing and doesn't object, then all her vows shall stand, and every bond with which she bound her soul shall stand.
- 12But if her husband cancels them on the day he hears about them, then nothing she said — whether a vow or a bond of her soul — will stand. Her husband has voided them, and the LORD will forgive her.
- 13Her husband has the authority to uphold or cancel any vow or binding oath she makes to afflict her soul.
- 14But if her husband says nothing to her day after day, he confirms all her vows and commitments by his silence. They stand because he didn't object on the day he heard about them.
- 15If he waits and cancels them later, after he has already heard them, then he will bear the guilt for her broken commitment."
- 16These are the laws the LORD gave Moses regarding vows between a husband and wife, and between a father and his young daughter still living in his house.
