  1. 1And I stood on the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having 7 heads and 10 horns, and on his horns 10 crowns, and on his heads the name of blasphemy.
  2. 2The beast looked like a leopard, but it had the feet of a bear and the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave this beast his power, his throne, and great authority.
  3. 3One of the beast's heads appeared to have suffered a fatal wound, but the wound had been healed. The whole earth was amazed and followed after the beast.
  4. 4People worshiped the dragon because he had given his authority to the beast. They also worshiped the beast, saying, "Who can compare to the beast? Who could possibly fight against him?"
  5. 5And there was given to him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given to him to continue 42 months.
  6. 6He opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven.
  7. 7He was allowed to wage war against the saints and to defeat them. He was also given authority over every tribe, language, and nation.
  8. 8Everyone living on earth will worship him — everyone whose name has not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world.
  9. 9If anyone has an ear, let him hear.
  10. 10Whoever leads into captivity will go into captivity; whoever kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
  11. 11Then I saw another beast rising up out of the earth. He had two horns like a lamb, but he spoke like a dragon.
  12. 12He exercised all the authority of the first beast on his behalf and caused the earth and everyone living on it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
  13. 13He performed great wonders, even making fire come down from heaven to the earth while people watched.
  14. 14He deceived the people living on earth through the signs he was allowed to perform on behalf of the first beast. He told them to build an image honoring the beast who had been wounded by the sword and yet survived.
  15. 15He was given the power to give life to the image of the beast, so that the image could speak and cause those who would not worship it to be killed.
  16. 16He forced everyone — small and great, rich and poor, free and slave — to receive a mark on their right hand or on their forehead.
  17. 17No one could buy or sell unless they had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
  18. 18This calls for wisdom. Let anyone with understanding calculate the number of the beast, because it is the number of a man. His number is 666.
