- 1"Write this to the angel of the church in Sardis: These are the words of the one who holds the 7 Spirits of God and the 7 stars. I know what you've been doing. You have a reputation for being alive, but you are dead.
- 2Be alert, and strengthen what remains, which is about to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God.
- 3Remember what you received and heard. Hold on to it and repent. If you do not stay alert, I will come upon you like a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.
- 4Still, there are a few people in Sardis who haven't stained their garments. They will walk with me dressed in white, because they are worthy.
- 5Everyone who overcomes will be clothed in white garments. I will never blot their name out of the book of life, but I will confess their name before my Father and before his angels.
- 6If you have ears to hear, then listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.
- 7"Write this to the angel of the church in Philadelphia: These are the words of the one who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. When he opens a door, no one can shut it. When he shuts a door, no one can open it.
- 8I know what you've been doing. Look — I have placed an open door in front of you that no one can shut. You have only a little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.
- 9Pay attention: there are people from the synagogue of Satan who claim to be Jews but are not—they are liars. I will make them come and worship before your feet, and they will know that I have loved you.
- 10Because you have kept the word of my patience, I will also keep you from the hour of temptation that will come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth.
- 11I am coming soon! Hold tight to what you have so that no one takes your crown.
- 12Everyone who overcomes — I will make them a pillar in the temple of my God, and they will never leave it again. I will write on them the name of my God, the name of the city of my God — the new Jerusalem that comes down out of heaven from my God — and my own new name.
- 13If you have ears to hear, then listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.
- 14"Write this to the angel of the church in Laodicea: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation.
- 15I know what you've been doing. You are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were one or the other!
- 16So because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spit you out of my mouth.
- 17You say, 'I am rich. I have everything I need. I lack nothing.' But you don't realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.
- 18Here is my advice: buy from me gold refined by fire so you can be rich. Buy white garments to wear so the shame of your nakedness won't be exposed. Buy eye salve to put on your eyes so you can see.
- 19Everyone I love, I correct and discipline. So be zealous and repent.
- 20Look — I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and dine with them, and they with me.
- 21Everyone who overcomes — I will give them the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.
- 22If you have ears to hear, then listen to what the Spirit says to the churches."
