- 1I watched as the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures speak with a voice like thunder: "Come and see!"
- 2I looked, and there was a white horse. Its rider carried a bow, and he was given a crown. He rode out as a conqueror, bent on conquest.
- 3When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, "Come and see!"
- 4Then another horse appeared, fiery red. Its rider was given the power to take peace from the earth, so that people would kill one another. He was given a great sword.
- 5When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come and see!" I looked, and there was a black horse. Its rider held a pair of scales in his hand.
- 6Then I heard a voice from among the four living creatures say, "A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny! But don't harm the oil and the wine!"
- 7When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, "Come and see!"
- 8And I looked, and there was a pale horse: and the name of him who sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given to them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
- 9When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony they held.
- 10They cried out with a loud voice, saying, "How long, O Lord, holy and true, do you not judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?"
- 11Each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to rest a little while longer, until the number of their fellow servants and brothers and sisters, who would be killed as they were, was completed.
- 12I watched as the Lamb opened the sixth seal. A massive earthquake struck. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of hair, and the moon turned blood red.
- 13The stars of heaven fell to the earth like unripe figs shaken loose from a tree by a violent wind.
- 14The heaven departed like a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island were moved from their places.
- 15Then the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the chief captains, the mighty men, along with every bondman and every free man, hid themselves in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.
- 16And they said to the mountains and rocks, "Fall on us, and hide us from the face of the one who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!"
- 17For the great day of his wrath has come, and who shall be able to stand?
