  1. 1So what advantage does the Jew have? Or what value is there in circumcision?
  2. 2A great deal, in every way! First and foremost, they were entrusted with the very words of God.
  3. 3But what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief nullify the faithfulness of God?
  4. 4Absolutely not! Let God be true and every person a liar. As it is written, 'So that you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you are judged.'
  5. 5But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unjust for bringing his wrath? (I am speaking in human terms.)
  6. 6Absolutely not! For then how could God judge the world?
  7. 7But if the truth of God overflows even more through my lie, to his glory, why am I still judged as a sinner?
  8. 8And why not say — as we are slanderously reported to say, and as some claim we teach — 'Let us do evil so that good may come'? Their condemnation is deserved.
  9. 9What then? Are we any better off? Not at all! For we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin,
  10. 10as it is written: 'There is no one righteous, not even one.
  11. 11There is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks after God.
  12. 12All have turned away; together they have become worthless. There is no one who does good, not even one.'
  13. 13'Their throat is an open grave; with their tongues they practice deceit. The poison of vipers is under their lips.'
  14. 14'Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.'
  15. 15'Their feet are swift to shed blood.
  16. 16Ruin and misery are in their paths,
  17. 17and the way of peace they have not known.'
  18. 18'There is no fear of God before their eyes.'
  19. 19Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.
  20. 20Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by the works of the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.
  21. 21But now the righteousness of God has been revealed apart from the law, though the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it —
  22. 22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction,
  23. 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
  24. 24and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
  25. 25God put him forward as a propitiation through faith in his blood, to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had passed over former sins.
  26. 26He did this to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
  27. 27Then where is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith.
  28. 28For we conclude that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.
  29. 29Is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also,
  30. 30since God is one, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith.
  31. 31Do we then overthrow the law through faith? Absolutely not! Rather, we uphold the law.
