- 1So now there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who live not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
- 2Because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death.
- 3What the law was unable to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God accomplished by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh. As an offering for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,
- 4so that the righteous requirement of the law would be fully met in us who live not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
- 5Those who live according to the flesh focus their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit focus on the things of the Spirit.
- 6A mind set on the flesh leads to death, but a mind set on the Spirit leads to life and peace.
- 7The mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God — it does not submit to God's law, and in fact it cannot.
- 8So then, those who live according to the flesh cannot please God.
- 9But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him.
- 10But if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
- 11If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who lives in you.
- 12Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, but not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
- 13If you live according to the flesh, you will die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
- 14All who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
- 15You did not receive a spirit of slavery to fear again. Instead, you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, 'Abba, Father!'
- 16The Spirit itself testifies with our spirit that we are the children of God.
- 17If we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ—if indeed we suffer with him, so that we may also be glorified together.
- 18I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.
- 19The whole creation waits with eager longing for the sons of God to be revealed.
- 20Creation was subjected to futility — not by its own choice, but because of the one who subjected it — yet with hope,
- 21because creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.
- 22We know that the entire creation has been groaning together in the pains of labor up to this very moment.
- 23Not only creation, but we ourselves — who have the firstfruits of the Spirit — groan inwardly as we eagerly wait for our adoption, the redemption of our bodies.
- 24For we are saved by hope. But hope that is seen is not hope, for who hopes for what they already see?
- 25But if we hope for what we do not yet see, we wait for it with patience.
- 26In the same way, the Spirit also helps us with our weaknesses, for we do not know what we should pray for as we should. But the Spirit itself intercedes for us with groans that cannot be spoken.
- 27The one who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
- 28We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God — those who are called according to his purpose.
- 29For those God foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
- 30Those he predestined, he also called. Those he called, he also justified. Those he justified, he also glorified.
- 31What then should we say about all of this? If God is for us, who can stand against us?
- 32He did not spare his own Son but gave him up for all of us — how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us everything else?
- 33Who can bring any charge against God's chosen ones? It is God who justifies.
- 34Who then can condemn us? Christ Jesus is the one who died — and more than that, who was raised to life — and is now at the right hand of God, interceding for us.
- 35Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Can tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or the sword?
- 36As it is written: "For your sake we face death all day long; we are treated like sheep to be slaughtered."
- 37No — in all these things we are more than conquerors through the one who loved us.
- 38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present nor things to come,
- 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
