The Man at the Pool of Bethesda

¹After this there was a Jewish festival, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. ²In Jerusalem, near the Sheep Gate, there is a pool called Bethesda in Hebrew, which has five covered walkways. ³In these lay a great number of sick people — blind, lame, and withered — waiting for the stirring of the water. ⁴For an angel would go down at a certain time into the pool and stir the water. The first person to step in after the water was stirred would be healed of whatever disease they had. ⁵One man was there who had been suffering from his condition for thirty-eight years. ⁶When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been in that condition a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be made well?" ⁷The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get there, someone else steps in ahead of me." ⁸Jesus said to him, "Get up, pick up your mat, and walk." ⁹Immediately the man was made well, picked up his mat, and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath. ¹⁰So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your mat." ¹¹He answered them, "The man who made me well told me, 'Pick up your mat and walk.'" ¹²They asked him, "Who is the man who told you, 'Pick up your mat and walk'?" ¹³But the man who had been healed did not know who it was, because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. ¹⁴Later, Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you." ¹⁵The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
