Jesus Comforts His Disciples

¹"Don't let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God — believe also in me." ²"In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you." ³"And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am, you may be also." ⁴"And where I am going you know, and the way you know." ⁵Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you're going. How can we know the way?" ⁶Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." ⁷"If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him, and have seen him." ⁸Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us." ⁹Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?" ¹⁰"Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me, he does the works." ¹¹"Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me — or else believe because of the works themselves." ¹²"Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to my Father." ¹³"And whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son." ¹⁴"If you ask anything in my name, I will do it." ¹⁵"If you love me, keep my commandments." ¹⁶"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, to be with you forever —" ¹⁷"the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you." ¹⁸"I will not leave you as orphans. I will come to you." ¹⁹"In a little while the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you will live also." ²⁰"On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you." ²¹"Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, that is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him." ²²Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, "Lord, how is it that you will reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?" ²³Jesus answered him, "If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him." ²⁴"Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine, but the Father's who sent me." ²⁵"These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you." ²⁶"But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance everything I have said to you." ²⁷"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." ²⁸"You heard me say to you, 'I am going away, and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, for my Father is greater than I." ²⁹"And now I have told you before it happens, so that when it does happen, you may believe." ³⁰"I will not speak much more with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has nothing in me." ³¹"But so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded me. Rise, let us go from here." Chapter 15¹"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. ²Every branch in me that does not produce fruit, he cuts off, and every branch that does produce fruit, he prunes so that it will produce even more. ³You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. ⁴Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch cannot produce fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me. ⁵I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, and I in them, produces much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. ⁶If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown aside like a branch and withers. Such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. ⁷If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. ⁸My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples. ⁹Just as the Father has loved me, I have also loved you. Remain in my love. ¹⁰If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love. ¹¹I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. ¹²This is my commandment: that you love one another as I have loved you. ¹³"No one has greater love than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." ¹⁴You are my friends if you do whatever I command you. ¹⁵I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because everything I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. ¹⁶You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give it to you. ¹⁷These things I command you: love one another. ¹⁸If the world hates you, know that it hated me before it hated you. ¹⁹If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world — since I chose you out of the world — the world hates you. ²⁰Remember the word I said to you: a servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you as well. If they kept my word, they will keep yours also. ²¹But they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me. ²²If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin. ²³Whoever hates me hates my Father also. ²⁴If I had not done among them the works that no one else has done, they would not have sin. But now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father. ²⁵But this is to fulfill the word that is written in their law: 'They hated me without a cause.' ²⁶But when the Comforter comes, whom I will send to you from the Father — the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father — he will testify about me. ²⁷And you also will testify, because you have been with me from the beginning." Chapter 16¹"I have told you all of this so that you won't fall away. ²They will put you out of the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering service to God. ³They will do these things because they have not known the Father or me. ⁴But I have told you these things so that when the time comes, you will remember that I warned you. I didn't tell you these things at the beginning because I was with you. ⁵But now I am going to the one who sent me, and none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' ⁶Instead, because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. ⁷But I am telling you the truth — it is better for you that I go away. If I don't go away, the Comforter will not come to you. But if I leave, I will send him to you. ⁸When he comes, he will convict the world regarding sin, regarding righteousness, and regarding judgment: ⁹regarding sin, because they do not believe in me; ¹⁰regarding righteousness, because I am going to my Father and you will see me no more; ¹¹regarding judgment, because the prince of this world has been judged. ¹²"I still have many things to tell you, but you cannot bear them now. ¹³But when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; whatever he hears, he will speak, and he will show you things to come. ¹⁴He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and make it known to you. ¹⁵Everything the Father has is mine. That is why I said he will take what is mine and make it known to you. ¹⁶"A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me, because I am going to the Father." ¹⁷Then some of his disciples said among themselves, "What is this that he says to us, 'A little while, and you will not see me: and again, a little while, and you will see me,' and, 'Because I go to the Father'?" ¹⁸They kept saying, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying." ¹⁹Jesus knew they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, "Are you questioning among yourselves about what I said: 'A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me'? ²⁰Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. ²¹A woman in labor has pain because her hour has come. But when she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, because of her joy that a human being has been born into the world. ²²So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. ²³On that day you will ask me nothing. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give it to you. ²⁴Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, so that your joy may be full. ²⁵"I have spoken these things to you in figurative language. A time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but will tell you plainly about the Father. ²⁶On that day you will ask in my name, and I am not saying to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf, ²⁷for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. ²⁸I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going to the Father." ²⁹His disciples said, "Now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative language! ³⁰Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you. By this we believe that you came from God." ³¹Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? ³²Look, the hour is coming, and has now come, when you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. ³³I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage — I have overcome the world."
