John 13:1–30
1Now before the Passover festival, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2During supper, the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him. 3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4got up from the meal, set aside his outer garments, took a towel, and wrapped it around his waist. 5Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, drying them with the towel he had wrapped around himself. 6When he came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" 7Jesus answered him, "You don't understand what I'm doing now, but you will understand later." 8Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I don't wash you, you have no part with me." 9Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not just my feet, but my hands and my head as well!" 10Jesus said to him, "Someone who has been bathed needs only to wash his feet, and is completely clean. And you are clean, but not all of you." 11For he knew who was going to betray him; that is why he said, "Not all of you are clean." 12After he had washed their feet, put his garments back on, and sat down again, he said to them, "Do you understand what I have done for you?" 13"You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right to say so, because that is what I am." 14"If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet." 15"For I have given you an example, so that you would do as I have done for you." 16"Truly, truly, I tell you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him." 17"If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them." 18"I am not speaking about all of you — I know the ones I have chosen. But this is so that the Scripture may be fulfilled: 'The one who eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.'" 19"I am telling you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen, you will believe that I am he." 20"Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever receives anyone I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me." 21After saying this, Jesus was troubled in his spirit and testified, "Truly, truly, I tell you, one of you will betray me." 22The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he was speaking. 23One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was reclining close to Jesus. 24Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus who he was talking about. 25So leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?" 26Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread after I dip it." Then he dipped the bread and gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27After Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, "What you are going to do, do quickly." 28No one at the table understood why Jesus said this to him. 29Since Judas kept the money bag, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the feast, or to give something to the poor. 30After receiving the piece of bread, Judas went out immediately. And it was night.
