Acts 1:12–26

12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is about a Sabbath day's journey from the city. 13When they arrived, they went to the upstairs room where they were staying. Present were Peter, James, John, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the brother of James. 14These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. 15During those days, Peter stood up among the disciples — a group of about 120 people — and said, 16Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David about Judas, who was the guide for those who arrested Jesus. 17Judas was one of us. He had been given his share in this ministry. 18This man bought a field with the reward of his wickedness. He fell headfirst, burst open in the middle, and all his intestines gushed out. 19Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they named that field Aceldama in their own language, which means 'The Field of Blood.' 20Peter continued, "It's written in the book of Psalms: 'Let his home become deserted; let no one live in it,' and also, 'Let someone else take his position.' 21So we need to choose someone who has been with us the entire time the Lord Jesus was among us — 22from the time of John's baptism all the way until the day Jesus was taken up from us. This person must join us as a witness of his resurrection." 23They nominated 2 men: Joseph called Barsabas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these 2 you have chosen 25to take part in this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas fell because of his wrongdoing, so that he might go to his own place.” 26Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias. He was added to the 11 apostles.

About this event

What happened?

After Jesus was taken up to heaven, Peter stood up among about 120 believers in Jerusalem. He said that Judas' place among the apostles must be filled. The man had to have been with them the whole time, from John's baptism to the day Jesus was taken up. They put forward Joseph called Barsabbas and Matthias. They prayed, “Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen.” Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias.
