“Tabitha, Get Up”

The Gospel for the Gentiles · Joppa

Acts 9:36–43

36In Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which translated means Dorcas. She was full of good works and acts of kindness that she did. 37In those days she became sick and died. After washing her body, they laid her in an upper room. 38Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples heard that Peter was there and sent two men to him, urging him, "Please come to us without delay." 39Peter got up and went with them. When he arrived, they brought him to the upper room. All the widows stood around him weeping, showing him the tunics and garments that Dorcas had made while she was with them. 40But Peter sent them all out of the room, knelt down, and prayed. Then turning to the body, he said, "Tabitha, get up." She opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up. 41He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then he called in the saints and widows and presented her alive. 42This became known throughout all of Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. 43Peter stayed in Joppa for many days with a man named Simon, a tanner.
