- 1Amaziah son of Joash became king of Judah during the 2nd year of King Joash son of Jehoahaz of Israel's reign.
- 2He was 25 years old when he became king, and he ruled in Jerusalem for 29 years. His mother was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.
- 3He did what was right in the sight of the LORD, but not like David his father. He followed all the ways of his father Joash.
- 4However, the high places were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.
- 5Once Amaziah had a firm grip on the kingdom, he executed the officials who had assassinated his father the king.
- 6However, he did not put their children to death. He followed what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, where the LORD commanded: "Fathers must not be executed for their children's sins, and children must not be executed for their fathers' sins. Each person must die only for their own sin."
- 7Amaziah killed 10,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt and captured Sela in battle. He renamed it Joktheel, and it's still called that today.
- 8Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, king of Israel, son of Jehoahaz and grandson of Jehu, saying, "Come, let's look each other in the face."
- 9King Jehoash of Israel sent this reply to King Amaziah of Judah: "A thistle in Lebanon once sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter to my son as a wife.' But a wild animal came along and trampled the thistle flat.
- 10Yes, you have indeed defeated Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Take glory in this and stay at home. Why should you meddle and bring harm upon yourself, causing both you and Judah to fall?
- 11But Amaziah refused to listen. So King Jehoash of Israel marched out, and the two kings faced each other in battle at Beth-shemesh, a town in Judah.
- 12Judah was defeated by Israel, and every man fled to his tent.
- 13King Jehoash of Israel captured King Amaziah of Judah — the son of Joash, grandson of Ahaziah — right there at Beth-shemesh. Then Jehoash marched to Jerusalem and tore down a 400-cubit section of the city wall, from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate.
- 14He seized all the gold and silver and every vessel found in the LORD's temple and in the royal treasury. He also took hostages and then returned to Samaria.
- 15Everything else about Jehoash's reign—his might, his achievements, and how he fought against King Amaziah of Judah—is recorded in the official history of Israel's kings.
- 16Jehoash died and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. His son Jeroboam succeeded him as king.
- 17King Amaziah of Judah, son of Joash, outlived King Jehoash of Israel, son of Jehoahaz, by 15 years.
- 18Everything else about Amaziah's reign is recorded in the official history of Judah's kings.
- 19A group of conspirators plotted against him in Jerusalem. He fled to Lachish, but they sent men after him and killed him there.
- 20They brought his body back on horses and buried him in Jerusalem with his ancestors in the city of David.
- 21Then all the people of Judah chose Azariah, who was just 16 years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah.
- 22Azariah rebuilt Elath and brought it back under Judah's control after his father had died.
- 23Jeroboam son of Joash became king of Israel in Samaria during the 15th year of King Amaziah of Judah's reign. He ruled for 41 years.
- 24The LORD saw that he was evil. He never turned away from any of the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had introduced, the sins that led Israel astray.
- 25He reclaimed Israel's territory from the entrance of Hamath all the way down to the Sea of the Arabah. This fulfilled the word the LORD, the God of Israel, had spoken through his servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath-hepher.
- 26The LORD saw how bitter Israel's suffering was: there was no one confined, no one left, and no one to help Israel.
- 27The LORD had not said he would wipe Israel's name from under heaven. Instead, he rescued them through Jeroboam son of Joash.
- 28The rest of Jeroboam's acts, all he did, his might, how he fought, and how he recovered Damascus and Hamath, which belonged to Judah, for Israel, are recorded in the chronicles of the kings of Israel.
- 29Jeroboam died and was buried with the kings of Israel. His son Zachariah succeeded him as king.
