- 1When the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
- 2Suddenly a sound came from heaven like a powerful, rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
- 3Then there appeared to them divided tongues, like flames of fire, and it rested on each one of them.
- 4They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages as the Spirit gave them the ability.
- 5Now there were devout Jews living in Jerusalem who had come from every nation under heaven.
- 6When this news spread, a crowd gathered and was bewildered because each person heard them speaking in his own language.
- 7They were all amazed and astonished and said to one another, “Look, aren’t all these people who are speaking Galileans?”
- 8Then how is it that each of us hears them in the language we grew up speaking?
- 9Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and those living in Mesopotamia, Judaea, Cappadocia, Pontus, and Asia,
- 10Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the parts of Libya near Cyrene, visitors from Rome — both Jews and converts to Judaism —
- 11Cretans and Arabians — we all hear them declaring the mighty works of God in our own languages!"
- 12Everyone was amazed and confused, asking each other, "What does this mean?"
- 13But others mocked them, saying, "These men are full of new wine."
- 14Then Peter stood up with the eleven, raised his voice, and said to them: 'Men of Judaea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to my words.'
- 15These people aren't drunk, as you're assuming. It's only 9 in the morning!
- 16No, this is what the prophet Joel spoke about:
- 17'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
- 18Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
- 19I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below — blood, fire, and billowing smoke.
- 20The sun will turn to darkness, and the moon to blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord arrives.
- 21And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'
- 22Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth was a man approved by God among you through miracles, wonders, and signs, which God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves also know.
- 23This man was handed over to you by God's deliberate plan and foreknowledge, and you used lawless men to nail him to a cross and kill him.
- 24But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because death could not hold him.
- 25David said this about him: 'I always kept the Lord before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
- 26That is why my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices. Even my body will rest in hope,
- 27because you will not leave my soul in hell, nor will you allow your Holy One to see decay.
- 28You have shown me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.'
- 29"Brothers, let me speak plainly about the patriarch David: he died, he was buried, and his tomb is still here among us to this day.
- 30But David was a prophet, and he knew that God had sworn an oath to him, that from the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, God would raise up Christ to sit on his throne.
- 31Foreseeing this, he spoke of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, nor did his flesh experience decay.
- 32God raised this Jesus to life, and every one of us is a witness to it.
- 33Therefore, being exalted to the right hand of God and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out what you now see and hear.
- 34David himself did not ascend into the heavens, yet he said, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand
- 35until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."'
- 36"So let everyone in Israel know this beyond any doubt: God has made this Jesus — the very one you crucified — both Lord and Christ."
- 37When the people heard this, it cut them to the heart. They cried out to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what should we do?"
- 38Peter answered, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
- 39This promise is for you, for your children, and for everyone who is far away — for everyone the LORD our God will call."
- 40Peter kept urging them with many more words, pleading, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation!"
- 41Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand souls were added to their number that day.
- 42They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, to fellowship with one another, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.
- 43And fear came upon every soul, and the apostles performed many wonders and signs.
- 44All the believers stayed together and shared everything they had.
- 45They sold their property and possessions and distributed the money to anyone who was in need.
- 46And continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and singleness of heart,
- 47praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
