  1. 1The serpent was the most clever of all the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say you must not eat from any tree in the garden?"
  2. 2The woman answered the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,
  3. 3But God said we must not eat from the tree in the middle of the garden, and we must not even touch it, or we will die."
  4. 4"You won't die," the serpent told her.
  5. 5God knows that when you eat from it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil.
  6. 6The woman looked at the tree and saw that it was good for food, beautiful to look at, and desirable for gaining wisdom. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate it too.
  7. 7Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
  8. 8And they heard the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves among the trees, away from the presence of the LORD God.
  9. 9The LORD God called out to the man, "Where are you?"
  10. 10He answered, "I heard you in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid."
  11. 11God asked, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree I told you not to eat from?"
  12. 12The man said, "The woman you gave to be with me — she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it."
  13. 13Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What have you done?" She answered, "The serpent tricked me, and I ate."
  14. 14So the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you did this, you are cursed above all livestock and wild animals. You will crawl on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life.
  15. 15I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; it will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.
  16. 16To the woman he said, "I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception. In sorrow you will give birth to children. Your desire will be to your husband, and he will rule over you."
  17. 17To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree I commanded you not to eat from, the ground is cursed because of you; in sorrow you will eat from it all the days of your life."
  18. 18It will produce thorns and weeds, and you will eat the wild plants of the field.
  19. 19You will work hard and sweat to produce food, until you return to the ground from which you were made. You are dust, and to dust you will return."
  20. 20Adam named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
  21. 21The LORD God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife and dressed them.
  22. 22Then the LORD God said, "The man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand, take also from the tree of life, eat, and live forever—"
  23. 23So the LORD God sent Adam out of the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been made.
  24. 24After driving out the man, God placed Cherubims at the east of the Garden of Eden, along with a flaming sword that turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
