- 1Joseph was taken down to Egypt, where Potiphar purchased him from the Ishmeelites who had brought him there. Potiphar was an Egyptian, one of Pharaoh's officials and the captain of the guard.
- 2The LORD was with Joseph, so he became a successful man while living in the household of his Egyptian master.
- 3His master noticed that the LORD was with Joseph and that the LORD made everything he did succeed.
- 4Joseph found grace in Potiphar's eyes and attended to him personally. Potiphar appointed him overseer of his entire household and entrusted everything he owned to Joseph's care.
- 5From the moment Potiphar made him overseer of his household and everything he possessed, the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD rested on all that Potiphar had, both indoors and in the fields.
- 6Potiphar left everything in Joseph's hands and didn't concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was handsome and good-looking.
- 7After some time, his master's wife looked at Joseph and said, "Sleep with me."
- 8But he refused and told his master's wife, "Look, my master does not worry about anything in this house. He has placed everything he owns under my authority.
- 9No one in this household has more authority than I do. He has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I possibly do such a terrible evil and sin against God?"
- 10Although she pressured Joseph day after day, he would not listen to her or agree to sleep with her or even spend time with her.
- 11One day, Joseph entered the house to attend to his work, and none of the household servants were inside.
- 12She grabbed hold of his garment and said, "Sleep with me!" But he pulled away, leaving his garment in her hand, and ran outside.
- 13When she realized that he had left his garment in her hand and had run away,
- 14she called out to the men of her household and said to them, "Look! My husband brought this Hebrew into our home to humiliate us. He came to me trying to sleep with me, but I screamed at the top of my voice.
- 15When he heard me raise my voice and scream, he abandoned his garment beside me and ran out of the house."
- 16She kept his garment beside her until her husband returned home.
- 17Then she repeated the same story to him, saying, "That Hebrew slave you brought into our home came to me to humiliate me.
- 18But when I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment beside me and ran outside."
- 19When his master heard his wife's account, telling him, "This is what your slave did to me," his anger burned intensely.
- 20Joseph's master seized him and threw him into prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined. So Joseph remained there in the prison.
- 21But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him mercy, causing him to find favor with the prison warden.
- 22The warden placed all the prisoners under Joseph's supervision. Whatever was done there, Joseph was the one responsible for it.
- 23The warden did not need to oversee anything under Joseph's care, because the LORD was with him, and the LORD made everything he did succeed.
