  1. 1Some time later, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt committed offenses against their master, the king of Egypt.
  2. 2Pharaoh became angry with his two officials — the chief cupbearer and the chief baker.
  3. 3He had them locked up in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison where Joseph was held.
  4. 4The captain of the guard assigned Joseph to attend to them, and he took care of their needs. They remained in custody for some time.
  5. 5One night, both the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison, each had a dream, and each dream carried its own meaning.
  6. 6When Joseph came to them the next morning, he noticed that they both looked troubled.
  7. 7He asked Pharaoh's officials who were with him in his master's prison, "Why do your faces look so distressed today?"
  8. 8They replied, "Each of us had a dream, but there is no one here to explain what they mean." Joseph said to them, "Don't interpretations belong to God? Please, tell me your dreams."
  9. 9So the chief cupbearer described his dream to Joseph. He said, "In my dream, there was a grapevine right in front of me."
  10. 10"The vine had three branches. As soon as it sprouted, it blossomed, and its clusters produced ripe grapes."
  11. 11"I was holding Pharaoh's cup, so I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand."
  12. 12Joseph told him, "Here is what it means: the three branches represent three days."
  13. 13"Within three days, Pharaoh will raise you up and give you back your position. You will once again put Pharaoh's cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you served as his cupbearer."
  14. 14"But when things go well for you, please remember me. Show me kindness by mentioning me to Pharaoh and help get me out of this place."
  15. 15"I was taken by force from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being thrown into this dungeon."
  16. 16When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was favorable, he said to Joseph, "I had a dream too! In it, I had three white baskets stacked on my head."
  17. 17"The top basket was filled with all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but birds were eating them out of the basket on my head."
  18. 18Joseph responded, "Here is what it means: the three baskets represent three days."
  19. 19Within three days, Pharaoh will lift your head from you and hang you on a tree, and the birds will eat your flesh.
  20. 20On the 3rd day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, he made a feast for all his servants and lifted up the head of the chief butler and the chief baker among his servants.
  21. 21He gave the chief cupbearer back his position, and the cupbearer once again placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand.
  22. 22But Pharaoh had the chief baker hanged — exactly as Joseph had explained to them.
  23. 23The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph. He forgot all about him.
