- 1Say to your brothers, 'Ammi,' and to your sisters, 'Ruhamah.'
- 2Confront your mother—confront her! She is not my wife, and I am not her husband. Tell her to stop her prostitution and remove her adulteries from between her breasts.
- 3Otherwise, I will strip her naked and set her as in the day she was born. I will make her like a wilderness and set her like a dry land, and kill her with thirst.
- 4I will not have mercy on her children, for they are the children of whoredoms.
- 5Their mother has been a prostitute. The woman who conceived them has acted shamefully. She said, 'I'll chase after my lovers — the ones who give me my food and water, my wool and linen, my olive oil and wine.'
- 6Therefore, look, I will block your way with thorns and make a wall so that she will not find her paths.
- 7She will run after her lovers but never catch them. She will search for them but never find them. Then she'll say, 'I should go back to my first husband, because life was better with him than it is now.'
- 8She did not realize that I gave her the grain, the wine, and the olive oil, and increased her silver and gold, which they used for Baal.
- 9So I will take back my grain at harvest time and my wine when it ripens. I will reclaim the wool and linen I gave her to cover herself.
- 10Now I will expose her shame right in front of her lovers, and no one will be able to rescue her from my hand.
- 11I will put an end to all her celebrations — her festivals, her new moon observances, her Sabbaths, and every one of her sacred assemblies.
- 12I will destroy her grapevines and fig trees — the ones she bragged about, saying, 'These are the wages my lovers paid me.' I will turn them into wild thickets, and animals will devour them.
- 13I will punish her for all those days she burned incense to the Baals, when she dressed herself up with rings and jewelry, chased after her lovers, and forgot all about me," says the LORD.
- 14"But here is what I will do: I will win her back. I will lead her out into the wilderness and speak tenderly to her heart.
- 15From there I will give her back her vineyards, and I will turn the Valley of Achor into a doorway of hope. She will sing there like she did when she was young, like the day she came up out of Egypt.
- 16And on that day," says the LORD, "you will call me Ishi and will no longer call me Baali.
- 17I will remove the names of the Baals from her lips, and no one will even mention their names anymore.
- 18On that day, I will make a covenant for them with the wild animals, the birds of heaven, and the creatures that crawl on the ground. I will break the bow, the sword, and the battle from the earth, and make them lie down safely.
- 19I will betroth you to me forever; yes, I will betroth you to me in righteousness and justice, in lovingkindness and mercy.
- 20I will betroth you to me in faithfulness, and you will know the LORD.
- 21And it shall come to pass on that day, says the LORD, I will hear the heavens, and they will hear the earth.
- 22The earth will hear the grain, the wine, and the oil, and they will hear Jezreel.
- 23I will plant her for myself in the land. I will show mercy to the one who was called 'No Mercy,' and I will say to those who were called 'Not My People,' 'You are my people!' And they will answer, 'You are my God!'"
