- 1A message about Damascus: Look — Damascus will no longer be a city. It will be reduced to a pile of rubble.
- 2The cities of Aroer will be abandoned. Flocks will roam freely there and lie down with no one to disturb them.
- 3Ephraim will lose its fortress, Damascus will lose its kingdom, and the remnant of Syria will be like the glory of the children of Israel, says the LORD of hosts.
- 4When that day comes, Jacob's glory will waste away, and his healthy body will grow thin and weak.
- 5It will be like when the harvester gathers the grain and reaps the ears with his arm; it will be like one who gathers ears of grain in the valley of Rephaim.
- 6Yet some gleaning grapes will be left, like when an olive tree is shaken: two or three berries at the top of the highest branch, four or five on the outer fruitful branches, says the LORD God of Israel.
- 7When that day comes, people will turn their eyes back to their Maker and look with respect to the Holy One of Israel.
- 8He will not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither will he respect that which his fingers have made, either the groves or the images.
- 9On that day, their strong cities will be like a forsaken bough and an uppermost branch, abandoned because of the children of Israel, and there will be desolation.
- 10Because you have forgotten the God of your salvation and have not remembered the Rock of your strength, you will plant pleasant plants and set them with foreign vines.
- 11In the day you will make your plant grow, and in the morning you will make your seed flourish, but the harvest will be a heap in a day of grief and desperate sorrow.
- 12Woe to the hordes of many people, who roar like the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations, that surge like mighty waters!
- 13The nations rush like the rushing of many waters — but God will rebuke them, and they will flee far off, chased like chaff from the mountains before the wind, like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.
- 14At evening, sudden terror strikes. Before morning comes, they're gone — vanished. That is the fate of those who plunder us, the destiny of those who rob us.
