- 1In the 9th year of King Zedekiah of Judah's reign, during the 10th month, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his entire army and laid siege to it.
- 2In the eleventh year of Zedekiah, on the ninth day of the fourth month, the city was breached.
- 3All the princes of the king of Babylon entered the city and sat at the Middle Gate: Nergalsharezer, Samgarnebo, Sarsechim the Rabsaris, Nergalsharezer the Rabmag, and all the rest of the princes of the king of Babylon.
- 4When King Zedekiah of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled the city at night through the king's garden, using the gate between the two walls, and went toward the plain.
- 5But the Babylonian army pursued them and caught Zedekiah on the plains of Jericho. They captured him and brought him to King Nebuchadnezzar at Riblah in the land of Hamath, where Nebuchadnezzar pronounced judgment on him.
- 6Then the king of Babylon killed the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes. He also killed all the nobles of Judah.
- 7Then he put out Zedekiah's eyes, bound him with chains, and had him taken to Babylon.
- 8The Babylonians burned down the royal palace and the homes of the people, and they tore down the walls of Jerusalem.
- 9Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, took captive to Babylon the remaining people in the city, along with those who had deserted to him, and the rest of the people who were left.
- 10However, Nebuzaradan left behind the poorest people in the land—those who owned nothing—and gave them vineyards and fields at the same time.
- 11Now Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon gave instructions concerning Jeremiah to Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, saying,
- 12Take him and take good care of him. Do not harm him in any way. Do for him whatever he asks.
- 13So Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard sent, along with Nebushasban the Rabsaris, Nergalsharezer the Rabmag, and all the princes of the king of Babylon;
- 14They sent for Jeremiah and took him out of the court of the prison, placing him in the care of Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, to take him home. So he dwelt among the people.
- 15While Jeremiah was still confined in the courtyard of the guard, the word of the LORD came to him:
- 16Go tell Ebedmelech the Ethiopian: This is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: 'I am about to bring my words upon this city for evil, and not for good; and they will be fulfilled on that day before you.'
- 17But I will rescue you on that day,' declares the LORD. 'You will not be handed over to the men you fear.
- 18For I will surely rescue you, and you will not fall by the sword, but your life will be as a prize for you, because you have put your trust in me, says the LORD.
