- 1From inside the belly of the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God.
- 2He said, "In my distress I cried out to the LORD, and he answered me; from the depths of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice."
- 3You hurled me into the deep, into the heart of the sea. Currents swirled around me, and all your waves and breakers crashed over me.
- 4Then I said, 'I am cast out of your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.'
- 5The waters surrounded me, even to the soul; the deep closed in around me, and seaweed wrapped around my head.
- 6I sank to the roots of the mountains; the earth with its bars surrounded me forever. Yet you, LORD my God, brought up my life from corruption.
- 7When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD, and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple.
- 8Those who hold on to deceptive illusions abandon their own mercy.
- 9But I will offer you a sacrifice with the voice of thanksgiving. I will fulfill what I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.
- 10Then the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
