- 1If a soul sins, hears the voice of swearing, and is a witness—whether he has seen or known of it—and he does not speak of it, then he will bear his iniquity.
- 2Or if a soul touches any unclean thing, whether it is the carcass of an unclean wild animal, an unclean domestic animal, or an unclean creature that crawls on the ground, and it is hidden from him, he also becomes unclean and guilty.
- 3If someone touches any kind of human uncleanness — whatever form it takes — without realizing it at first, once they become aware of it, they are guilty.
- 4Or if a soul swears, speaking with his lips to do evil or to do good, whatever a man may declare with an oath, and it is hidden from him; when he becomes aware of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these.
- 5When someone is guilty of any of these things, they must confess the specific sin they committed.
- 6Then they must bring a guilt offering to the LORD for their sin: a female lamb or goat from the flock as a sin offering. The priest will then make atonement for their sin.
- 7If they can't afford a lamb, they must bring 2 turtledoves or 2 young pigeons to the LORD as their guilt offering — one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering.
- 8They must bring the birds to the priest. He will offer the sin offering first, wringing its head from its neck but not completely severing it.
- 9He will sprinkle some of the blood from the sin offering against the side of the altar, and the rest of the blood will be drained out at the base of the altar. This is a sin offering.
- 10He will then offer the second bird as a burnt offering according to the standard procedure. In this way the priest will make atonement for the person's sin, and they will be forgiven.
- 11If they can't even afford 2 turtledoves or 2 young pigeons, they must bring a tenth of an ephah of fine flour as a sin offering. They must not put oil on it or add frankincense to it, because it is a sin offering.
- 12They must bring it to the priest, and the priest will scoop up a handful as the memorial portion and burn it on the altar along with the other fire offerings to the LORD. This is a sin offering.
- 13The priest will make atonement for the person's sin — whichever of these they committed — and they will be forgiven. Whatever flour remains will belong to the priest, just like a grain offering.
- 14The LORD spoke to Moses and said,
- 15If a soul commits a trespass and sins through ignorance in the holy things of the LORD, then he shall bring to the LORD a ram without blemish from the flock, valued in silver shekels according to the sanctuary standard, as a trespass offering.
- 16They must also make full restitution for whatever they wrongly took from the holy things, adding an extra fifth of its value, and give it to the priest. The priest will then make atonement for them with the ram of the trespass offering, and they will be forgiven.
- 17If a soul sins by doing any of the things forbidden by the commandments of the LORD, even if he does not know it, he is still guilty and shall bear his iniquity.
- 18They must bring a ram without any defect from the flock, properly valued, as a trespass offering to the priest. The priest will make atonement for the sin they committed unknowingly, and they will be forgiven.
- 19This is a trespass offering. That person has certainly sinned against the LORD."
