- 1Jesus also said to his disciples, "There was a wealthy man who had a manager, and the manager was accused to him of wasting his goods."
- 2So the rich man called him in and said, 'What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you may no longer be steward.'
- 3The manager thought to himself, 'What shall I do now that my master is taking away my position? I cannot dig, and I am ashamed to beg.'
- 4I am determined what to do, so that when I am removed from the stewardship, they will welcome me into their homes.
- 5So he called in each person who owed his master money. He asked the first one, 'How much do you owe my master?'
- 6The man answered, '100 measures of oil.' The manager told him, 'Here, take your bill, sit down right now, and change it to 50.'
- 7Then he asked another, 'And how much do you owe?' He said, '100 measures of wheat.' The manager told him, 'Take your bill and change it to 80.'
- 8The master praised the dishonest manager for acting shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the children of light.
- 9And I tell you, make friends for yourselves with the mammon of unrighteousness, so that when you fail, they may welcome you into everlasting dwellings.
- 10Whoever is faithful with very little will also be faithful with a lot. And whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with a lot.
- 11“Therefore, if you have not been faithful with unrighteous wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you?”
- 12And if you haven't been faithful with what belongs to someone else, who is going to give you something of your own?
- 13No servant can serve two masters. Either he'll hate one and love the other, or he'll be devoted to one and look down on the other. You cannot serve both God and money."
- 14The Pharisees, who were covetous, heard all these things and mocked him.
- 15Jesus said to them, "You make yourselves look righteous in front of people, but God knows your hearts. What people value most highly is an abomination to God.
- 16The Law and the prophets were in effect until John. Since then, the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone is pressing into it.
- 17But it would be easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the smallest detail of the Law to lose its force.
- 18Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and whoever marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.
- 19"There was a rich man who dressed in purple robes and the finest linen, living in luxury every single day.
- 20At his gate lay a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores.
- 21Lazarus longed to eat the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table. Additionally, dogs came and licked his sores.
- 22Eventually the beggar died, and angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried.
- 23And in hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus beside him.
- 24He cried out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me! Send Lazarus to dip just the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
- 25But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things. Now he is comforted here, and you are in torment.'
- 26Beyond all that, a massive chasm has been set between us and you. No one who wants to cross from here to you can do it, and no one can cross from there to us.'
- 27"The rich man said, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house.
- 28I have 5 brothers. Let him warn them so they don't end up in this place of torment too.'
- 29"But Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.'
- 30"'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.'
- 31"Abraham told him, 'If they won't listen to Moses and the prophets, they won't be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'"
