- 1Then Jesus called his 12 disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.
- 2Then he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
- 3He told them, "Don't take anything for the journey — no walking stick, no bag, no bread, no money. Don't even pack an extra coat.
- 4Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town.
- 5If a town won't welcome you, shake the dust off your feet as you leave — as a witness against them."
- 6So they set out, traveling from village to village, preaching the good news and healing people everywhere they went.
- 7Herod the tetrarch heard about everything that was happening, and he was perplexed because some people were saying that John had risen from the dead.
- 8Others claimed that Elijah had appeared, and still others said one of the ancient prophets had come back to life.
- 9Herod said, "I had John beheaded. So who is this man I keep hearing about?" And he kept trying to see Jesus.
- 10When the apostles returned, they told Jesus everything they had done. He took them and withdrew privately to a remote area near the town of Bethsaida.
- 11But the crowds found out and followed him. He welcomed them, spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing.
- 12As the day was winding down, the 12 came to him and said, "Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and farms to find food and a place to stay. We're out here in the middle of nowhere."
- 13But Jesus said, "You feed them." They replied, "All we have is 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish — unless you want us to go buy food for all these people."
- 14There were about 5,000 men in the crowd. Jesus told his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about 50."
- 15They did as he said and got everyone seated.
- 16Jesus took the 5 loaves and the 2 fish, looked up to heaven, blessed them, broke them into pieces, and handed them to the disciples to distribute to the crowd.
- 17Everyone ate and was completely satisfied. Afterward, the disciples picked up 12 baskets full of leftover pieces.
- 18One time when Jesus was praying alone — with his disciples nearby — he asked them, "Who do the crowds say I am?"
- 19They answered, "Some say John the Baptist. Others say Elijah. And others think one of the ancient prophets has risen again."
- 20"But who do you say I am?" he asked. Peter answered, "The Christ of God."
- 21Jesus strictly warned them not to tell anyone this.
- 22He said, "The Son of Man must suffer many things. He will be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes. He will be killed, and on the 3rd day he will be raised to life."
- 23Then he said to all of them, "If anyone wants to follow me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.
- 24Whoever tries to hold on to his life will lose it, but whoever gives up his life for my sake will save it.
- 25What benefit is there for a person to gain the whole world but lose himself or be thrown away?
- 26If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
- 27I'm telling you the truth: some of you standing here right now will not taste death before you see the kingdom of God."
- 28About 8 days after he said these things, Jesus took Peter, John, and James and went up on a mountain to pray.
- 29While he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white.
- 30Suddenly, 2 men appeared and were talking with him — they were Moses and Elijah.
- 31who appeared in glory and spoke about his departure, which he would accomplish at Jerusalem.
- 32Peter and the others had been overcome with sleep, but when they fully woke up, they saw his glory and the 2 men standing with him.
- 33As they departed from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three tents—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He did not know what he was saying.
- 34While he was still speaking, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
- 35Then a voice came from the cloud: "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him!"
- 36When the voice had spoken, Jesus was standing there alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and told no one at that time what they had seen.
- 37The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met them.
- 38A man in the crowd shouted, "Teacher, I'm begging you — please look at my son! He's my only child.
- 39A spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. It throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth, and it bruises him and departs with difficulty.
- 40I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn't."
- 41Jesus replied, "You faithless and twisted generation, how long must I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here."
- 42Even as the boy was coming forward, the demon slammed him to the ground and threw him into violent convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.
- 43Everyone was stunned by the mighty power of God. While they were all marveling at everything Jesus was doing, he said to his disciples,
- 44"Let these words sink deep into your ears: the Son of Man is going to be handed over to men."
- 45But they didn't understand what he meant. The meaning was hidden from them so they couldn't grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
- 46An argument broke out among the disciples about which of them was the greatest.
- 47Jesus, knowing what they were thinking in their hearts, took a little child and had the child stand beside him.
- 48Then he told them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. The one who is the least among all of you — that person is truly great."
- 49John spoke up and said, "Master, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he isn't part of our group."
- 50Jesus told him, "Don't stop him. Whoever is not against you is for you."
- 51As the time approached for him to be taken up, he resolutely set out for Jerusalem.
- 52He sent messengers ahead of him, and they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his arrival.
- 53But the people there refused to welcome him because he was heading toward Jerusalem.
- 54When his disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them, just like Elijah did?"
- 55But he turned, rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what kind of spirit you are of.”
- 56"The Son of Man didn't come to destroy people's lives but to save them." Then they moved on to another village.
- 57As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "Lord, I'll follow you wherever you go."
- 58Jesus replied, "Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."
- 59To another man he said, "Follow me." But the man replied, "Lord, let me go home first and bury my father."
- 60Jesus told him, "Let the dead bury their own dead. You go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
- 61Yet another person said, "Lord, I'll follow you, but first let me go say goodbye to my family."
- 62Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and then looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."
