- 1After this, Jesus traveled through cities and villages, preaching and announcing the good news of the kingdom of God. The 12 disciples were with him,
- 2along with certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and diseases. Among them was Mary, called Magdalene, from whom 7 demons had been driven out;
- 3Joanna, the wife of Chuza, who was Herod's household manager; Susanna; and many others. These women supported Jesus and his disciples out of their own resources.
- 4A huge crowd was gathering, with people streaming in from every town. Jesus told them a parable:
- 5"A farmer went out to plant his seed. As he scattered it, some fell along the path, where it was trampled underfoot, and the birds came and ate it up.
- 6Some fell on rocky ground, and as soon as it sprouted, it withered because it had no moisture.
- 7Some fell among thorn bushes, and the thorns grew up alongside it and choked it out.
- 8But some fell on good soil, and it grew and produced a crop 100 times what was planted." After saying this, he called out, "If you have ears to hear, then listen!"
- 9His disciples asked him, "What does this parable mean?"
- 10He said, "To you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to others I speak in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand."
- 11"Here's what the parable means: The seed is the word of God.
- 12The seed along the path represents people who hear the word, but then the devil comes and snatches it from their hearts so they won't believe and be saved.
- 13The seed on rocky ground represents people who hear the word and receive it with joy, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but when temptation comes, they fall away.
- 14The seed that fell among thorns represents people who hear the word, but as they go through life, they get choked by worries, wealth, and pleasures, and they never produce mature fruit.
- 15But the seed on good soil represents people with an honest and good heart who hear the word, hold on to it, and produce fruit through patience."
- 16No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or places it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand so that those who enter may see the light.
- 17Nothing is secret that won't eventually be revealed, and nothing is hidden that won't be made known and brought into the open.
- 18So pay close attention to how you listen. Whoever has, more will be given to them; but whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken away.
- 19Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him, but they couldn't get to him because of the crowd.
- 20Someone told him, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you."
- 21He replied, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and put it into practice."
- 22One day Jesus got into a boat with his disciples and said, "Let's cross over to the other side of the lake." So they set out.
- 23As they sailed, Jesus fell asleep. Then a fierce windstorm swept down on the lake, and the boat was filling with water. They were in serious danger.
- 24The disciples rushed to him and woke him up, shouting, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" He got up and commanded the wind and the raging waves to stop. They obeyed, and everything became perfectly calm.
- 25He turned to them and asked, "Where is your faith?" Shaken and amazed, they said to each other, "Who is this man? He gives orders to the wind and the water, and they obey him!"
- 26They sailed to the region of the Gadarenes, which is across the lake from Galilee.
- 27When Jesus stepped ashore, a man from the town met him who had been possessed by demons for a long time. He wore no clothes and didn't live in a house — he lived among the tombs.
- 28When he saw Jesus, he screamed and threw himself down before him, shouting, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I'm begging you, don't torment me!"
- 29He said this because Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of him. The spirit had seized him many times before. Even when he was chained hand and foot, he would snap the chains and be driven by the demon into desolate places.
- 30Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" He answered, "Legion" — because many demons had entered him.
- 31The demons kept begging Jesus not to send them into the deep.
- 32A large herd of pigs was feeding on the mountainside nearby. The demons begged Jesus to let them enter the pigs, and he gave them permission.
- 33The demons came out of the man and went into the pigs. The entire herd stampeded down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.
- 34When the men tending the pigs saw what happened, they ran off and reported it throughout the town and the surrounding countryside.
- 35People came out to see what had happened. When they reached Jesus, they found the man the demons had left—sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed, and in his right mind. They were afraid.
- 36The eyewitnesses told everyone how the demon-possessed man had been healed.
- 37Then the entire population of the Gadarene region begged Jesus to leave, because they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and headed back.
- 38The man who had been freed from the demons begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying,
- 39"Go home and tell everyone what God has done for you." So the man went through the whole city, declaring what Jesus had done for him.
- 40When Jesus returned to the other side, the crowd welcomed him eagerly because they had all been waiting for him.
- 41Just then, a man named Jairus came forward. He was a synagogue leader. He fell at Jesus' feet and pleaded with him to come to his house,
- 42because his only daughter, about 12 years old, was dying. As Jesus made his way there, the crowds pressed in around him from every side.
- 43In the crowd was a woman who had been suffering from bleeding for 12 years. She had spent everything she had on doctors, but no one could heal her.
- 44She came up behind Jesus and touched the edge of his garment. Instantly, her bleeding stopped.
- 45Jesus asked, "Who touched me?" Everyone denied it, and Peter said, "Master, the whole crowd is pushing and pressing against you. How can you ask, 'Who touched me?'"
- 46But Jesus said, "Someone touched me; I felt power go out from me."
- 47When the woman realized she couldn't hide, she came forward trembling and fell at his feet. In front of everyone, she explained why she had touched him and how she had been healed instantly.
- 48Jesus said to her, "Daughter, take heart. Your faith has made you whole. Go in peace."
- 49While Jesus was still speaking, someone arrived from Jairus' house with a message: "Your daughter is dead. Don't bother the Teacher anymore."
- 50But when Jesus heard this, he told Jairus, "Don't be afraid. Just believe, and she will be healed."
- 51When he arrived at the house, he didn't let anyone go inside with him except Peter, James, John, and the girl's father and mother.
- 52Everyone there was weeping and mourning for her. Jesus said, "Stop crying. She isn't dead — she's sleeping."
- 53They laughed at him, because they knew she was dead.
- 54But Jesus made them all leave. He took the girl by the hand and called out, 'Child, get up!'
- 55Her spirit returned, and she stood up immediately. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat.
- 56Her parents were astonished, but Jesus strictly instructed them not to tell anyone what had happened.
