  1. 1This is where the good news about Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begins.
  2. 2As the prophets wrote long ago: "Look — I am sending my messenger ahead of you to prepare your way.
  3. 3A voice is calling out in the wilderness: 'Get the road ready for the Lord! Straighten out his paths!'"
  4. 4John baptized in the wilderness and preached the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
  5. 5People from all the land of Judea and Jerusalem went out to him and were baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.
  6. 6John wore clothes made of camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist, and he lived on locusts and wild honey.
  7. 7He preached to the crowds, saying, "Someone far more powerful than me is coming after me. I'm not even worthy to kneel down and untie his sandals.
  8. 8I've baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
  9. 9During that time, Jesus traveled from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
  10. 10As soon as he came up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
  11. 11Then a voice spoke from heaven: "You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
  12. 12Right away, the Spirit drove him out into the wilderness.
  13. 13He stayed in the wilderness for 40 days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild animals. Angels took care of him.
  14. 14After John was put in prison, Jesus went to Galilee and began preaching the good news of God's kingdom.
  15. 15He said, "The time has come! God's kingdom is near. Repent and believe the good news."
  16. 16As Jesus walked along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew throwing a net into the water — they were fishermen.
  17. 17Jesus called out to them, "Come, follow me, and I'll make you fishers of men."
  18. 18They dropped their nets right then and followed him.
  19. 19A little farther down the shore, he saw James and John, the sons of Zebedee, sitting in their boat and mending their nets.
  20. 20He called them immediately. They left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired workers and went with Jesus.
  21. 21They went to Capernaum, and on the Sabbath Jesus went straight into the synagogue and began teaching.
  22. 22They were astonished at his teaching because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the scribes.
  23. 23Just then, a man in the synagogue who was possessed by an unclean spirit screamed out,
  24. 24Leave us alone; what do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!
  25. 25Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet and come out of him!"
  26. 26The unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions, let out a loud shriek, and came out of him.
  27. 27They were all amazed, so much that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What thing is this? What new teaching is this? For with authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.”
  28. 28News about Jesus spread instantly across the entire region of Galilee.
  29. 29As soon as they left the synagogue, they went to the home of Simon and Andrew, along with James and John.
  30. 30Simon's mother-in-law was lying in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her right away.
  31. 31He went to her, took her hand, and helped her up. The fever left her instantly, and she began serving them.
  32. 32That evening after sunset, people brought to Jesus everyone who was sick or possessed by demons.
  33. 33The whole town crowded around the door.
  34. 34He healed many people suffering from all kinds of diseases and drove out many demons. He wouldn't let the demons speak, because they knew who he was.
  35. 35Long before dawn the next morning, Jesus got up, slipped away to a deserted place, and prayed.
  36. 36Simon and those with him followed after him.
  37. 37When they found him, they said, "Everyone is looking for you!"
  38. 38Jesus replied, "Let's move on to the nearby towns so I can preach there too. That's why I came."
  39. 39So he traveled throughout all of Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
  40. 40A man with leprosy came to him, dropped to his knees, and begged, "If you're willing, you can make me clean."
  41. 41Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched him. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean."
  42. 42The moment Jesus spoke, the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed.
  43. 43Jesus gave him a stern warning and sent him away at once.
  44. 44He told him, "Don't say anything to anyone. Go to the priest, show yourself to him, and offer the sacrifices Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them."
  45. 45But the man went out and told everyone he could, spreading the news so widely that Jesus could no longer enter any town openly. He had to stay out in remote areas — and still people came to him from everywhere.
