- 1And again he entered Capernaum after some days, and word spread that he was in the house.
- 2Immediately many were gathered together, so that there was no room to receive them, not even about the door. And he preached the word to them.
- 3And they came to him, bringing a paralyzed man carried by four men.
- 4But they couldn't get near Jesus because of the crowd. So they climbed up on the roof, made an opening above where he was, and lowered the paralyzed man down on his mat.
- 5When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, 'Son, your sins are forgiven.'
- 6But there were certain scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,
- 7Why does this man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?
- 8Jesus immediately knew in his spirit what they were thinking. He said to them, "Why are you questioning this in your hearts?
- 9Which is easier — to tell this paralyzed man, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up, pick up your mat, and walk'?
- 10But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." Then he turned to the paralyzed man and said,
- 11I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go your way into your house.
- 12The man immediately stood up, picked up his mat, and walked out in front of everyone. They were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We've never seen anything like this!"
- 13Jesus went out again along the shore of the lake. A large crowd gathered around him, and he taught them.
- 14As he walked along, he noticed Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at his tax collection booth. Jesus said to him, "Follow me." Levi got up and followed him.
- 15Later, Jesus was having dinner at Levi's house. Many tax collectors and sinners were eating with Jesus and his disciples, because a large number of them had begun following him.
- 16When the scribes and Pharisees saw him eating with tax collectors and sinners, they said to his disciples, "How is it that he eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?"
- 17Jesus overheard them and said, "Healthy people don't need a doctor — sick people do. I didn't come to call the righteous. I came to call sinners to repentance."
- 18The disciples of John and the Pharisees were observing a time of fasting. Some people came to Jesus and asked, "John's disciples fast, and the Pharisees' disciples fast — why don't your disciples fast?"
- 19Jesus said to them, “Can the bridegroom’s attendants fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.”
- 20“But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.”
- 21"Nobody patches an old garment with a piece of unshrunk cloth. If you do, the new patch will shrink and pull away from the old fabric, making the tear even worse.
- 22Nobody pours new wine into old wineskins either. The new wine would burst the old skins, and you'd lose both the wine and the skins. New wine needs fresh wineskins."
- 23One Sabbath, Jesus was walking through the grain fields, and his disciples began picking heads of grain as they went.
- 24The Pharisees said to him, "Look, why are they doing what is not allowed on the Sabbath?"
- 25Jesus replied, "Haven't you ever read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?
- 26How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest and ate the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and also gave some to those who were with him?
- 27Then he told them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath."
- 28So the Son of Man is Lord even over the Sabbath."
