- 2Jesus replied, "You see all these great buildings? Not one stone will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."
- 3Later, Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives, looking across at the temple. Peter, James, John, and Andrew came to him privately and asked,
- 4"Tell us, when will this happen? And what will be the sign that all of this is about to take place?"
- 5Jesus began to tell them, "Be on your guard so that no one deceives you.
- 6Many will come in my name, saying, 'I am Christ,' and they will deceive many.
- 7When you hear about wars and rumors of wars, don't be alarmed. These things have to happen, but it won't be the end yet.
- 8For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows.

- 11When they arrest you and put you on trial, don't worry ahead of time about what to say. Don't rehearse your words. Just speak whatever is given to you in that moment, because it won't be you speaking — it will be the Holy Spirit.
- 12Brothers will hand over their own brothers to be killed. Fathers will betray their children. Children will turn against their parents and have them put to death.
- 13And you will be hated by everyone for my name's sake, but whoever endures to the end will be saved.
- 14“But when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it should not be—let the reader understand—then let those in Judea flee to the mountains.”
- 15If you're on the roof of your house, don't go back inside to grab anything.
- 16If you're out in the field, don't go back to get your cloak.
- 17How terrible it will be for pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days!
- 18Pray that your escape doesn't happen in winter.
- 19For in those days there will be affliction, such as has not been since the beginning of the creation which God created until this time, nor ever will be.
- 20If the Lord hadn't shortened those days, no one would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened the days.
- 21If anyone tells you at that time, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'He's over there!' — don't believe it.
- 22“For false Christs and false prophets will arise and show signs and wonders to lead astray, if it were possible, even the chosen ones.”
- 23So stay alert. I've warned you about all of this ahead of time.
- 24But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light,
- 25Stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
- 26Then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.
- 27“Then he will send his angels and gather together his chosen ones from the four winds, from the farthest part of the earth to the farthest part of heaven.”
- 28"Learn this lesson from the fig tree: when its branches turn tender and its leaves begin to sprout, you know summer is close.
- 29In the same way, when you see these things happening, you'll know the time is near — right at the door.
- 30Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things happen.
- 31Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
- 32No one knows the day or the hour when this will happen — not the angels in heaven, not even the Son — only the Father.
- 33Stay alert, keep watch, and pray, because you don't know when the time will come.
- 34It's like a man who goes on a long journey. Before leaving, he puts his servants in charge, assigns each one a task, and tells the doorkeeper to stay alert.
- 35So stay watchful, because you don't know when the master of the house will return — whether in the evening, at midnight, at the rooster's crow, or at dawn.
- 36Don't let him arrive suddenly and find you asleep.
- 37What I'm telling you, I'm telling everyone: Stay watchful!"
