  1. 1It was 2 days before the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus through some trick and have him killed.
  2. 2"Not during the festival," they said, "or the people might riot."
  3. 3While Jesus was in Bethany, eating at the home of Simon the leper, a woman came in carrying an alabaster jar of pure nard — an extremely expensive perfume. She broke the jar open and poured it over his head.
  4. 4Some of those present were outraged. "Why would anyone waste perfume like that?" they said.
  5. 5"That could have been sold for more than 300 denarii and the money given to the poor!" They scolded her harshly.
  6. 6But Jesus said, "Leave her alone. Why are you giving her a hard time? She's done something beautiful for me.
  7. 7You'll always have the poor among you, and you can help them whenever you want. But you won't always have me.
  8. 8She did what she could — she anointed my body ahead of time for burial.
  9. 9I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the whole world, what she has done will also be told as a memorial to her.
  10. 10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the 12 disciples, went to the chief priests to hand Jesus over to them.
  11. 11When they heard his offer, they were glad and promised to pay him. From that point on, Judas looked for the right moment to betray him.
  12. 12On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, his disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?"
  13. 13He sent 2 of his disciples ahead, telling them, "Go into the city, and you'll meet a man carrying a pitcher of water. Follow him.
  14. 14Whatever house he enters, tell the owner, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with my disciples?'
  15. 15He'll show you a large upstairs room, already furnished and ready. Prepare the meal for us there."
  16. 16The disciples left, went into the city, and found everything exactly as Jesus had told them. They prepared the Passover meal.
  17. 17That evening, Jesus arrived with the 12.
  18. 18While they were sitting at the table eating, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth: one of you eating with me right now is going to betray me."
  19. 19They became sorrowful and began to ask him one by one, 'Is it I?' and another said, 'Is it I?'
  20. 20He told them, "It's one of the 12 — someone who is dipping bread into the dish with me right now.
  21. 21The Son of Man will go to his death just as the Scriptures say. But how terrible it will be for the man who betrays the Son of Man! It would have been better for that man if he had never been born."
  22. 22While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and handed it to them. "Take it and eat," he said. "This is my body."
  23. 23Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and passed it to them. They all drank from it.
  24. 24He told them, "This is my blood of the new testament, which is poured out for many."
  25. 25I tell you the truth: I won't drink the fruit of the vine again until the day I drink it new in the kingdom of God."
  26. 26After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
  27. 27Jesus told them, "Tonight, every one of you will fall away because of me. For the Scripture says, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.'
  28. 28But after I have risen, I'll go ahead of you to Galilee."
  29. 29Peter spoke up: "Even if everyone else falls away, I never will."
  30. 30Jesus said to him, "I tell you the truth: today — this very night — before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me 3 times."
  31. 31But Peter insisted even more forcefully, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!" All the others said the same thing.
  32. 32They came to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus told his disciples, "Sit here while I pray."
  33. 33He took Peter, James, and John with him, and began to be greatly amazed and deeply distressed;
  34. 34He said to them, "My soul is crushed with grief — to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch."
  35. 35Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if it were possible, this hour might pass him by.
  36. 36"Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Yet not what I want, but what you want."
  37. 37He came back and found them sleeping. "Simon, are you asleep?" he said to Peter. "Couldn't you keep watch for just one hour?
  38. 38Stay awake and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
  39. 39He went away again and prayed, saying the same words.
  40. 40When he returned, he found them sleeping again — their eyes were so heavy they couldn't keep them open. They didn't know what to say to him.
  41. 41He came the third time and said to them, "Sleep on now, and take your rest. It is enough; the hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners."
  42. 42Get up, let's go! My betrayer is here."
  43. 43And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived with a great crowd carrying swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.
  44. 44Judas had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man you want. Grab him and take him away under guard."
  45. 45The moment he arrived, Judas walked straight up to Jesus and said, "Rabbi! Rabbi!" and kissed him.
  46. 46The men seized Jesus and held him.
  47. 47One of the bystanders drew a sword, struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his ear.
  48. 48Jesus said to them, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me, as if I were a thief?"
  49. 49Day after day I was right there with you, teaching in the temple, and you never arrested me. But this is happening so that the Scriptures will be fulfilled."
  50. 50Then every one of his disciples abandoned him and ran.
  51. 51A young man had been following Jesus, wearing nothing but a linen cloth. The mob grabbed at him,
  52. 52but he slipped out of the cloth and ran away naked.
  53. 53They took Jesus to the high priest, where all the chief priests, elders, and scribes had gathered.
  54. 54Peter followed at a distance, all the way into the courtyard of the high priest's residence. He sat down with the guards and warmed himself by the fire.
  55. 55The chief priests and the entire council were trying to find testimony against Jesus so they could execute him, but they couldn't find any.
  56. 56Many people gave false testimony against him, but their stories contradicted each other.
  57. 57Then some men stood up and gave this false testimony:
  58. 58"We heard him say, 'I will tear down this temple made by human hands, and in 3 days I will build another one, not made by human hands.'"
  59. 59But even on this point, their stories didn't match.
  60. 60The high priest stood up before the assembly and demanded of Jesus, "Aren't you going to answer? What do you have to say about these accusations?"
  61. 61But Jesus stayed silent and gave no answer. The high priest pressed him again: "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"
  62. 62Jesus said, "I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven."
  63. 63The high priest tore his clothes and said, "Why do we need any more witnesses?
  64. 64You've heard the blasphemy! What's your verdict?" They all condemned him as deserving death.
  65. 65Some began to spit on him, cover his face, beat him with their fists, and say to him, “Prophesy!” The servants struck him with the palms of their hands.
  66. 66While Peter was down in the courtyard below, one of the high priest's servant girls came by.
  67. 67She noticed Peter warming himself, looked closely at him, and said, "You were with Jesus of Nazareth too."
  68. 68But Peter denied it. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said. He walked out to the entryway, and the rooster crowed.
  69. 69The servant girl saw him there and started telling the people standing around, "This man is one of them."
  70. 70He denied it again. A little later, those standing nearby again said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, because you are a Galilean, and the way you speak confirms it.”
  71. 71Peter began to call down curses on himself and swore, "I don't know this man you're talking about!"
  72. 72Immediately the rooster crowed a 2nd time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had told him: "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me 3 times." And he broke down and wept.
