  1. 1And when he called his twelve disciples to him, he gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and disease.
  2. 2Here are the names of the 12 apostles: first, Simon (called Peter) and his brother Andrew; then James son of Zebedee and his brother John;
  3. 3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus and Lebbaeus (also known as Thaddaeus);
  4. 4Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
  5. 5Jesus sent out these twelve and instructed them, saying, 'Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans.'
  6. 6Instead, go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
  7. 7As you go, preach this message: 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand!'
  8. 8Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, and cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.
  9. 9Don't carry gold, silver, or copper in your money belts.
  10. 10Do not take a bag for your journey, nor two coats, nor shoes, nor staves: for the worker is worthy of his food.
  11. 11When you enter any city or village, find someone there who is worthy, and stay with them until you leave.
  12. 12When you enter a house, greet it.
  13. 13If the household is worthy, let your peace rest on it. But if it isn't, take your peace back.
  14. 14If anyone refuses to welcome you or listen to your message, shake the dust off your feet as you leave that house or town.
  15. 15I tell you the truth: on the day of judgment, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.
  16. 16Listen — I'm sending you out like sheep among wolves. So be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.
  17. 17Watch out for people, because they will hand you over to councils and whip you in their synagogues.
  18. 18You will be brought before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony against them and the Gentiles.
  19. 19But when they arrest you, don't worry about what to say or how to say it. In that moment, the right words will be given to you.
  20. 20It won't be you speaking — it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
  21. 21Brothers will betray their own brothers to death, and fathers will turn on their children. Children will rebel against their parents and have them killed.
  22. 22Everyone will hate you because of me. But whoever endures to the end will be saved.
  23. 23When they persecute you in one city, escape to the next. I tell you the truth: you won't finish going through all the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
  24. 24A disciple isn't above his teacher, and a servant isn't above his master.
  25. 25It's enough for a disciple to become like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If people have called the head of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household?
  26. 26So don't be afraid of them. Everything that's covered up will be uncovered, and every secret will be brought to light.
  27. 27What I tell you in the dark, speak openly in the daylight. What I whisper in your ear, shout from the rooftops.
  28. 28Don't fear those who can kill the body but can't touch the soul. Instead, fear the one who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
  29. 29Are not two sparrows sold for one small coin? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father.
  30. 30Even the hairs on your head are all counted.
  31. 31So don't be afraid — you are worth far more than many sparrows.
  32. 32Everyone who acknowledges me before others, I will acknowledge before my Father in heaven.
  33. 33But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my Father in heaven.
  34. 34Don't assume I came to bring peace to the earth. I didn't come to bring peace — I came to bring a sword.
  35. 35I came to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
  36. 36A person's enemies will be those of their own household.
  37. 37Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me isn't worthy of me. Anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me isn't worthy of me.
  38. 38Anyone who won't take up their cross and follow me isn't worthy of me.
  39. 39Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.
  40. 40Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.
  41. 41Whoever welcomes a prophet because that person is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward. Whoever welcomes a righteous person because they are righteous will receive a righteous person's reward.
  42. 42And I tell you the truth: whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because they are a disciple will certainly not lose their reward.
