  1. 1Jesus got into a boat, crossed the lake, and arrived in his own city.
  2. 2Some people brought him a paralyzed man lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, "Take heart, son! Your sins are forgiven."
  3. 3Some of the scribes thought to themselves, "This man is blaspheming!"
  4. 4Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts?"
  5. 5Which is easier to say — 'Your sins are forgiven,' or 'Get up and walk'?
  6. 6But so you'll know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins —" he turned to the paralyzed man and said, "Get up, pick up your mat, and go home."
  7. 7The man stood up and went home.
  8. 8When the crowds saw this, they were amazed and praised God, who had given such power to men.
  9. 9As Jesus moved on from there, he noticed a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collection booth. Jesus said to him, "Follow me." Matthew got up and followed him.
  10. 10Later, while Jesus was eating in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and joined him and his disciples at the table.
  11. 11When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
  12. 12Jesus overheard them and replied, "Healthy people don't need a doctor — sick people do.
  13. 13Go and figure out what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' I didn't come to call the righteous. I came to call sinners to repentance."
  14. 14Then John's disciples came to Jesus and asked, "We fast often, and so do the Pharisees. Why don't your disciples fast?"
  15. 15Jesus answered, "Do wedding guests mourn while the groom is still with them? Of course not. But the time will come when the groom is taken away from them, and then they'll fast.
  16. 16Nobody patches an old garment with unshrunk cloth. The new patch would pull away from the old fabric and make the tear even worse.
  17. 17And nobody pours new wine into old wineskins. If they did, the skins would burst, the wine would spill out, and the skins would be ruined. Instead, new wine goes into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved."
  18. 18While he was saying these things to them, look, a certain ruler came and worshiped him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”
  19. 19Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.
  20. 20Just then, a woman who had been suffering from bleeding for 12 years came up behind Jesus and touched the edge of his garment.
  21. 21She had told herself, "If I can just touch his clothes, I'll be healed."
  22. 22Jesus turned around, and when he saw her, he said, "Take heart, daughter! Your faith has made you whole." From that moment on, the woman was made whole.
  23. 23When Jesus arrived at the ruler's house, he saw flute players and a crowd of people wailing loudly.
  24. 24He told them, "Everyone out. The girl isn't dead — she's sleeping." They laughed at him.
  25. 25After the crowd had been sent outside, Jesus went in, took the girl by the hand, and she got up.
  26. 26News of this spread throughout the entire region.
  27. 27As Jesus left that place, 2 blind men followed him, shouting, "Son of David, have mercy on us!"
  28. 28When he went inside a house, the blind men came to him. Jesus asked them, "Do you believe I can do this?" They answered, "Yes, Lord."
  29. 29Then he touched their eyes and said, "Let it happen for you according to your faith."
  30. 30Their eyes were opened, and they could see. Jesus gave them a stern warning: "Make sure no one finds out about this."
  31. 31But as soon as they left, they spread the news about him all over that region.
  32. 32As they were leaving, some people brought to Jesus a man who couldn't speak because he was possessed by a demon.
  33. 33Once Jesus drove the demon out, the man spoke. The crowds were astonished and said, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!"
  34. 34But the Pharisees claimed, "He drives out demons by the power of the prince of demons."
  35. 35Jesus traveled through all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.
  36. 36When he saw the crowds, he felt compassion for them, because they were faint and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd.
  37. 37He told his disciples, "The harvest is enormous, but the workers are few.
  38. 38So pray and ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest."
