- 1The Pharisees and Sadducees approached Jesus, trying to test him. They asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
- 2He replied, "In the evening you say, 'Tomorrow will be nice weather, because the sky is red.'
- 3And in the morning you say, 'It's going to storm today, because the sky is red and overcast.' You hypocrites! You know how to read the sky, but you can't read the signs of the times?
- 4“A wicked and adulterous generation seeks a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” Then he left them and went away.
- 5When the disciples crossed to the other side of the lake, they realized they had forgotten to bring bread.
- 6Jesus told them, "Watch out — beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
- 7They discussed among themselves, saying, "It is because we didn't bring any bread."
- 8Jesus knew what they were thinking and said, "You have so little faith! Why are you talking among yourselves about not having bread?
- 9Don't you understand yet? Don't you remember the 5 loaves that fed 5,000 people, and how many baskets of leftovers you collected?
- 10Or the 7 loaves that fed 4,000, and how many baskets you collected then?
- 11How can you not see that I wasn't talking about actual bread? I said beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
- 12Then they finally understood — he wasn't warning them about yeast in bread. He was warning them about the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
- 13When Jesus arrived in the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"
- 14They answered, "Some say John the Baptist. Others say Elijah. Still others say Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
- 15"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"
- 16Simon Peter spoke up: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
- 17Jesus replied, "You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven did."
- 18And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not overpower it.
- 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
- 20Then he strictly ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.
- 21From that point on, Jesus began explaining to his disciples that he had to go to Jerusalem, where he would suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and scribes. He told them he would be killed and then raised on the third day.
- 22Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, "Lord, may this never happen to you!"
- 23But Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me. You're not thinking about things the way God does — you're thinking like a human being."
- 24Then Jesus told his disciples, "If anyone wants to follow me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
- 25For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
- 26What good is it if someone gains the whole world but loses his own soul? What could anyone offer in exchange for his soul?
- 27The Son of Man will come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.
- 28I tell you the truth: some of you standing here right now will not taste death before you see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
