- 1“For the kingdom of heaven is like a man who was the head of a household and went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.”
- 2After agreeing with the laborers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
- 3Around 9 in the morning, he went out again and saw others standing idle in the marketplace.
- 4He told them, 'Go work in my vineyard too, and I'll pay you whatever is fair.' So they went.
- 5He went out again around noon and again around 3 in the afternoon, doing the same thing each time.
- 6About the eleventh hour, he went out and found others standing idle. He said to them, “Why have you stood here idle all day?”
- 7They answered, 'Because no one has hired us.' He told them, 'Go into the vineyard too, and you will receive whatever is right.'
- 8When evening came, the vineyard owner told his manager, 'Call the workers and pay them their wages — but start with the ones who were hired last and end with the ones hired first.'
- 9The workers hired at 5 in the afternoon came forward, and each one received a denarius.
- 10But when the workers who were hired first came, they expected to receive more. Each of them also received one denarius.
- 11When they got their pay, they complained to the landowner.
- 12They said, 'These last ones worked only one hour, and you made them equal to us, who have borne the burden and heat of the day.'
- 13But the landowner replied to one of them, 'Friend, I haven't cheated you. Didn't you agree to work for a denarius?
- 14“Take what is yours and go your way. I will give to this last one even as to you.”
- 15Is it not lawful for me to do what I want with my own? Is your eye evil because I am good?
- 16So the last will be first, and the first will be last: for many are called, but few are chosen.
- 17As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside along the way and said to them,
- 18"Listen," he said, "we're going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes. They will condemn him to death
- 19and turn him over to the Gentiles, who will mock him, whip him, and crucify him. But on the 3rd day, he will rise again."
- 20Then the mother of Zebedee's children came to Jesus with her sons, worshipping him and asking him for a favor.
- 21"What do you want?" Jesus asked her. She said, "Grant that my two sons may sit, one at your right hand and the other at your left, in your kingdom."
- 22But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink from the cup that I will drink from and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They said to him, “We are able.”
- 23He said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with. But to sit on my right hand and on my left is not mine to give, but for those for whom it is prepared by my Father.”
- 24When the other ten disciples heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers.
- 25But Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions exercise authority over them."
- 26But it must not be that way among you. Instead, whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant.
- 27Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave.
- 28In the same way, the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.
- 29As they were leaving Jericho, a huge crowd followed Jesus.
- 302 blind men were sitting beside the road, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they shouted, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!"
- 31The crowd told them to be quiet, but they only shouted louder: "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!"
- 32Jesus stopped and called out to them. "What do you want me to do for you?" he asked.
- 33They said to him, “Lord, may our eyes be opened.”
- 34Filled with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. Instantly they could see, and they followed him.
